PAGE 14 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 17,2002 Bunting takes over senior Hawkeyes Head coach expects team to be competitive BY CHARLEY MISNER Special to This Week DURHAM - It's only logical that Ian Bunting has been named the head coach of the Oshawa Hawkeyes men's senior football team. After all. Bunting has coached at every level of the Hawkeyes" system, from atom to junior, and comes armed with 30 years of gridiron experience Now he takes over for Ian McLean, who coached the Hawkeyes to a l-7 record during their expansion expansion season in the Northern Football Conference a year ago. McLean is moving on to be treasurer of the NFC. Bunting expects to have "at least 15 or 16 returning players" on which to build a program and expects the team to be more competitive competitive in its second season. "If we get the people out, we're better than a .500 football team," says Bunting. New additions to the team this year include Rick Moore, who Bunting has slated to play fullback, tail back A! Birtlnvright and linebacker Wayne Robinson. Robinson. Bunting expects his roster to take further shape this Sunday, when interested interested players are expected to turn out at Civic Fields from 11 a.m. until 2 pan. for a registration. It's open to players 20 years of age and up. The registration fee is $300, which Bunting said covers "everything", including equipment. Most players recruited to play for the Hawkeyes arc taken from the Durham area. Bunting says. "A lot of them arc local," said the Whitby resident. "A lot of them arc guys that have played for the Hawkeyes in the past or played high school here in the past." There arc also players, Bunting said, who arc in the midst of returning from university and expected to play for the Hawkeyes. A team that goes through a coaching change usually lakes time to adjust to the new coach's philosophy, philosophy, but Bunting's is refreshingly refreshingly simple: "If you want to be a winner, a winner winner never quits."
