PAGE A6THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 19, 2002 A day in the life Rob Andrews is always on the move as vice-principal at Courtice Secondary BY STEPHANIE ZACHARIAS Special to This Week COURTICE - There are some who say everything in life is a learning learning experience. Shadowing Rob Andrews, Andrews, vice-principal of Courtice Secondary School, has taught me a valuable lesson: a day in the life of a VP is never boring. Entering the school just past 8 a.m., the halls are already noisy and filled with teenagers, and the excitement excitement of summer vacation is in the air. The office too, is already buzzing - phones ringing and a constant stream of students coming in and out. Mr. Andrews isn't at his desk, and as it turns out, won't be for most of the morning. As he enters the office, Mr. An drews grabs some slips, answers a few questions and makes a quick pit- stop at his desk to see if anything of urgency has been dropped there in the last few minutes. "Anytime I walk out the door, something seems to come up," he chuckles. He sees some issues he needs to deal with today, but for now he is out again, to check the halls for stragglers stragglers to the 8:15 a.m. first period. "It's kind of like the triage process - you have to prioritize what is important," important," he says of the pile of papers on his desk. There are a lot of "Hey Mr. Andrews" Andrews" and "What's up Mr. Andrews" Andrews" as he walks the halls, which are painted with such .messages as 'Most succeed because they are determined determined to.' Right now, he says there are about 1,250 students enrolled, and about 100 staff working at the school. There are 15 portables in place to help hold everyone. Because of the numbers, Mr. Andrews is one of two vice-principals. A.J.
