PAGE 8 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 3,2002 Teddy bears share world travels with students BY CRYSTAL CRM! StaffWriter BOWMANVILLE - The bears arc back in town. Curly and Chestnut are two bears who have just returned home after taking an educational adventure to Hawaii, Australia, the continental United States, Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein. The bears began their world exploration exploration in September to help teach St. Joseph's French Immersion Grade 5 class about different cultures, geography and math. Their voyage began in Queen's Park on Parliament Hill and didn't end until this month when the two returned to Donna Paquette's classroom. "One got off to a horrible start because because it was lost for quite a long time. The box was crushed, the passport was lost, and we're still not sure what had happened, but it was quite an adventure," said Ms. Paquette. Schools in other countries hosted the bears and then shipped them to the next location; Siudents from the foreign schools would take the bears home for the evening and record a journal about what they were doing. Both bears have safely returned home now to continue as "students" in the Grade 5 class and have brought souvenirs souvenirs with them, such as letters, pictures, pictures, beads, a plastic alligator and Tabasco sauce from Louisiana, books and much more. Each student in Ms. Paquette's Paquette's class gets to take the bears home for a night and share with their family the letters and gifts sent back. "The letters describe the community and the makeup of the school," Ms. Paquette Paquette said. She said apart from learning about geography from tracking the bears' location, location, and the culture in other countries, the Grade 5 students got more from the adventure. "They learned to be responsible for something because these bears became a special member of the class. It was interesting interesting to see the concern they had for these bears," said Ms. Paquette. "I think we had a bit of a fear that the one wouldn't wouldn't come back."
