THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, AUGUST 21,2002 PAGE 5 There's plenty of room on the bus BUS from page 1 lar service with no charge until after Labour Day just to get people familiarized." familiarized." Clarington's buses will be unveiled at the end of the month, but until then the bus and temporary drivers will get residents where they want to go. "We've had a couple of customers already, I think it's going to be good. It seems to cover quite a big area," said Chris Reid, bus driver. She will be switching between both routes along with other drivers until all the possible bugs arc ironed out and a regular driver replaces her. Ms. Reid said the routes are simple to follow and well set-up. When the Liberty bus left the east corner of Temperance and Church streets, my half hour ride began. The wheels on the bus first went from Church to Liberty where it picked up a woman and her son just after passing the King Street intersection. "I'm sure it's going to be handy. It's a two-minute walk to the bus stop instead instead of a half hour walk," said Roseanne Fraser, who was taking her son Arden, five, to his day care on Church Street. "Have you ever tried to get a five-year-old to walk a half hour?" Past Baseline and down Simpson Avenue, a couple of elderly ladies were picked up at the Bowmanville Mall. "I'm a bus person -1 don't drive a car," said Marie Dunlop as the bus headed down Mearns Avenue. "We've been taking the GO bus. This is just starting today so we wanted to see how we like it." One more rider got on the bus at Apple Blossom Avenue to test how she likes busing it instead of driving to work. North on Liberty, to Freeland Avenue, Longworth to Scugog Street, the bus wrapped up the route and headed headed back to our departure point on Church Street. There, the driver traded routes and her bus became the Aspen Springs route. "This is the roundabout route; this is the touring bus," laughed Ms. Reid as she travelled west along Hwy. 2. "The first trip I didn't have anyone, the second one I had one and as the day goes on it .will get better. The kids usually usually don't wake up until.noon," added the bus driver. After taking Boswell Drive down to Hwy. 2, the bus picked up its next rider, an elderly man heading to a doctor's appointment on Queen Street. Through Aspen Springs and West Side Drive, the bus picked up Heather Ceranowicz and her son, Dawson, 2. They were going to the zoo. Along Waverly Road, back to King Street and up to Church for the end of the line, the ride was over and so were the pants I was wearing. Ms. Reid took her lunch break and another bus driver took over, continuing the drive through Clarington. Buses will run every 30 minutes during rush hours, and every hour the rest of the day from 6:20 a.m. to about 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
