It was amazing' Green Gaels edge St. Catharines 7-6 to win Founders Cup for third time in five years BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer HALTON HILLS - Remarkable. The books will show the Clarington Clarington Green Gaels winning the Founders Cup in 1998, 2000, 2002 and, if the trend continues, 2004, 2006, etc. But surely no championship past or future will match the one of the present when the stories are told and retold. To the surprise of many, but certainly certainly not themselves, the Green Gaels won five games in as many days, including a 7-6 thriller over the Spartan Warriors of St. Catharines in Sunday's final, to win their third national national Junior B lacrosse championship championship in the past five years. "I think it says a lot about the character and grit of this team," said head coach Brad MacArthur, whose club was crowned champion before a packed house of almost 1,500 in Hatton Hatton Hills. "They just never stopped." Indeed, they didn't stop when they trailed favoured Onondaga 2-0 in the Ontario Lacrosse Association East final, storming back to win three straight games at home to earn a berth at the tournament. It was the third time the Green Gaels, won a fifth and deciding game in the playoffs. Nor did they stop believing in themselves after being swept in three games by a combined score of 30-12 in the OLA final against the same St. Catharines team they ultimately turned the tables on. "Spartan showed us everything in the (Ontario) final and we showed them nothing," said general manager' Doug Lucy, who produced a broom before Sunday's game to remind the players of the sweep. "We were well coached, no doubt about it," added Luey, praising MacArthur and assistants Jay Morrison, Morrison, Jason Crosbie and Jonas Derks. "It was 1 hard to get cohesion, it took all season to do it, but it finally worked." Did it ever. After winning their pool with victories victories of 16-2 "over the New Westminster Westminster Salmonbellies} 8-5 over the Edmonton Miners and 16-2 over the Winnipeg Falcons, the Green Gaels needed 10 minutes of overtime to oust the host Halton Hills Bulldogs 7-5 in the semifinals. "After that game, that was when we started to feel we could do it," said Zach Greer, a callup from the Whitby midget ranks who scored the tying goal late in regulation and then fired both OT markers. "It was amazing." amazing." Doug Trudeau was the hero of the final, scoring Clarington's final two goals, including the winner in the final minute. Josh Colley added a goal and four assists, giving him a team-leading 10 goals and 16 assists for the tourney, while James Barton, Nate Andres, Mike Carroll and Greer added single tallies. Marvin Barr, who was acquired along with Trudeau from Wallace- burg at the trade deadline, was recognized recognized for his stellar defensive play by being named the tournament's most valuable player. "Basically every team we played, we put him on the other team's best player," MacArthur said of Barr, who contained Spartan's Andrew Burkholder Burkholder in the final and Daryl Veltmdn of the Bulldogs in the semis. "He definitely deserved it." Greer, who ended up with eight goals, and goalie Rick Passfield, who led the team to a remarkable 4.00 goals against average, were named to the tournament's six-player all-star team. Other Clarington goal scorers were Trudeau, Barton and Tyler Harris Harris with five each, Andres with four, Colin Baker, Shane Sargent and James Hinkson with three apiece, Jimmy Mumford and Jesse Thomas with two each, Dustin Morrison, Ryan Preston, J.H. MacDonald and Carroll with one each. The team was bolstered by the return return of captain Scott Theis, a massive defensive specialist who fought back from a knee injury to close out his junior junior career in style. Other team members are goalie Kurds Wagar, Dayne Boatswain, Mike Semeniuk, Chris Stewart, Andy Glen, Daryl Jackson and Tom Solomon. 2002 FOUNDERS CUP DIVISION A Clarington Green Gaels Edmonton Miners Winnipeg Falcons New Westminster Salmonbellies DIVISION B Spartan Warriors Halton Hills Bulldogs Calgary Mountaineers Bedford (N.S.)
