www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, SEPTEMBER 18, 2002 PAGE 5 Luke's Place fund-raiser exceeds $6,000 target Orgainizers estimate $8,000 raised BY CRYSTAL CRIMI Staff Writer : DURHAM - The community community has stepped up to the plate to fund-raise for 'Luke's Place,' a resource centre for abused women in memory of a murdered preschooler. preschooler. Over 100 items were do nated for a silent auction and baseball tournament hosted last Saturday by the Durham Regional Police. The fundraiser was held at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Recreation Complex in Bow- manvillc and although the final figures haven't come in yet, Donna Thomas of the Luke's Place Fundraising Committee guessed it was more than planned. "We had set a goal of $6,000 and we probably surpassed surpassed it to around $8,000," A.J. The charity tournament raised money for Luke's Place, a resource centre being created in memory of a murdered pre-schooler. she said. "The community really stepped up to the event." While six teams of police officers, firefighters, and other community partners partners battled in baseball games, spectators spectators bid on items in the silent auction and enjoyed the family festivities. At the end of the day not one item was left in the auction. Top sellers included a ring with 26 diamonds in it worth approximately $1,500, the Durham Regional Police helicopter ride-along for two, and a hand made cutty sark ship, all of which sold for about $400 each. "Everyone had a lot of fun," said Ms. Thomas. "Next year they're looking looking at stretching it to 12 teams, making sure there's lots for the family, perhaps animals from the zoo, we'll try to do more police things. This year we had old police cars and we're looking at basically basically building up the whole thing." She said so many people attended the event, it may end up outgrowing this year's location and be forced to move to a bigger recreational complex within the municipality. Detective Craig Greentree and Constable Constable Mike Swaga from the Clarington detachment started the fund-raiser. They were the initial officers assigned to the murder of three-year-old Luke Schillings. His father, who committed suicide just after the slaying, killed Luke while on an unsupervised visit in August 1997. Abuse survivors and focus groups introduced the idea of Luke's Place in 1999 and it is hoped a building will be purchased and prepared for the charity by next year. The centre will offer women and children a step between leaving an abusive relationship and entering entering a shelter. To make donations or for more information, information, phone 905-697-9525.
