Miller time Goalie has done 'fantastic job' for Bowmanville Eagles BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - The Provincial Provincial Junior A Hockey League is littered with talented players who have fallen through the cracks, unable to catch on with a team at a higher level. Rick Miller fits into that scenario. Undrafted and unsigned, the 17- year-old goaltender has been impressive impressive thus far with the Bowmanville Eagles. Eagles. So good, in fact, that the hockey club no longer talks in terms of a number number one goalie and a backup. Both Miller and veteran Daryl Bouchard continue to split the duties until somebody somebody emerges as the number one, or a trade is made. . "It's tough," said Miller of trying to gain confidence and get into a rhythm while splitting the duties. "Whenever you get a chance to play you want to play well so maybe you will get to play the next game. If you go in and choke, it's obvious you are going to sit the next game." Miller put in another solid performance performance Sunday night in a 6-1 victory over the winless Syracuse Stars at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. Complex. While the workload wasn't as heavy as past games, the Fort Erie native native still had to be sharp in the early going. "If (the Stars) get a couple of goals early, it takes your team out the game, it doesn't matter what their record is," he said. The Eagles built a 4-0 lead in the first period on the hapless Stars (0-13-0- 0) who were playing their third game in three nights, having lost in Lindsay (6- 5) Friday and Cobourg (5-1) Saturday. "As long as you let (Syracuse) stay in the game, the more confident they get. So we talked about going after them and putting them out of the game early," said coach Curtis Hodgins. Miller's path to Bowmanville has detoured through a couple of different towns, in both Ontario and Quebec. Following his bantam season, four Ontario Hockey League teams expressed expressed an interest in obtaining his services, services, but he went undrafted. After an impressive season in Niagara Falls with the AAA midget team, Miller was extended extended tryout invitations this fall with Baie-Comcau of the Quebec Major Junior Junior League, as well as Belleville and Sudbury of the OHL. After getting cut from Baic- Comcau, he travelled to Sudbury, but was the last goaltender cut in training camp. Ironically, one of the netminders who stayed in Sudbury was former Eagle Joel Whitmarsh. The affiliation with Sudbury resulted in Miller joining the Eagles. "(Sudbury) told me to gel in shape, play well, and maybe 1 would get back up for a couple of games," said Miller. "He's come in and done a fantastic job," said Hodgins. "1 think he will be a one year goalie for us and then move on to bigger and better things," If that scenario does unfold, it would suit Miller just fine. "I hope to get a call up," said the Grade 12 student at Bowmanville High School.
