PAGE 4THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, OCTOBER 30,2002 www.durhamregion.com Local well owners needed for thorough study DURHAM - The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is looking for a few good wells. In fact, CLOCA, in conjunction with the Ministry of Northern Development Development and Mines and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture is currently currently in search of approximately 100 ! water wells within the authority's ' watershed. The wells will be used as a part of the Groundwater Resource • Inventory Project. The purpose of the program is to create a baseline ' database of groundwater quality and quantity. "This is a cost-free opportunity for landowners to participate in a process which will not only help to protect their own groundwater source but will also serve their community's community's long-term needs as well," says Gayle SooChan, director of Groundwater Resources at CLOCA. "Water is our most valuable resource and this initiative will help protect our groundwater supply. Understanding Understanding the resource is the first step in that process and the information from individual wells is important in gaining insights into the workings of the groundwater system." If you own a drilled well and arc the original owner of that well, or know the name of the original owner, your well is a candidate for this program. Qualified CLOCA personnel will determine the well's suitability in addition to performing all manual tasks associated with the monitoring and sampling of the well. In return for granting a one-time access to the groundwater well, the landowner will receive free all the benefits of participating in this pro- • gram. This includes: • Sampling by a trained ground- water technician; . • Analysis of their groundwater by a certified and accredited private laboratory. • A letter to the landowner comparing comparing the results of the analysis to the Ontario Drinking Water Standards Standards as well as outlining any potential potential problems • A copy of the Water Well Best Management Practice Booklet to assist assist in maintaining the integrity of the water source. • Access to a trained hydrogeologist hydrogeologist in the event of any additional questions regarding the results. Although analytical information may be used for this project all personal personal information (i.e.: name and address) address) will be kept confidential.
