Disciplined the fish Bowmanville takes three of four points from Lindsay Muskies BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - There are still 28 games left in tire regular season before teams embark on the playoffs, playoffs, but the preparation for the post-season lias already begun to take shape for the Bowmanville Eagles. The home-and-home series series this past weekend with the Lindsay Muskies was a good example. Friday in Lindsay, the Eagles Eagles played a sound game, resulting resulting in a 5-5-ovcrtime draw. In the rematch Sunday, the Eagles took advantage of home ice, cruising to a 6-2 victory at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. Complex. More importantly, the Eagles Eagles displayed the type of discipline that needs to be exercised exercised in the playoffs to he successful, especially when the outcome of Sunday's game was no longer in doubt. "Tonight we just wanted to play a smart game," said coach Curtis Hodgins. "We knew (Lindsay) would be undisciplined and we played smart and that was the difference difference in the game." The game featured a couple couple of lights and seven major penalties, live to Lindsay, during an evening that was on the brink of becoming a nasty affair. "We're not that type of team," says Hodgins of getting getting involved in a penally- filled game, supported by the fact the team averages just 18.44 minutes in penalties per game, second lowest in the East Conference to Wellington's I6.35. Lindsay checks in with the third highest highest average among the l() teams at 29,58, "Thai's (he type of team (Lindsay) wants up there," continued Hodgins, "We talked about composure and discipline and we don't accept accept any stupid stulT because in the long run that kills you, especially in the playoffs, If you're undisciplined all year, you can't turn it off in the playoffs." That message is sometimes sometimes lost on players, who get caught up in evening scores from the previous game in back-to-back meetings. meetings. "At a home-and-home series series sometimes it gets out of hand like that," said rookie forward Steve Seedhouse, who scored twice and added an assist in the win. "When it comes to that, we were winning the game and you can't get sucked into taking dumb penalties." The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, as Seedhouse scored his first of two on the night, followed by a short-handed breakaway goal by Brent Small and a power-play tally by Jason Speight. Matt Carroll banged home a rebound early in the second period for a 4-0 lead. Lindsay finally broke goal- tender Rick Miller's shutout bid early in the third on the power play as Derek Hennessey Hennessey scored the first of his two. Sandwiched in between were power-play goals by Seedhouse and Drew St. Laurent. "We're getting belter each week here. You can sec it," said Hodgins. "The guys arc gelling some confidence and the young guys arc getting a lot of ice time." One of the benefactors of that extra ice lime has been Seedhouse, who raised his point totals to 3-4-7 in 19 games. "I'm starling to get more confident with the puck. At the start of the year when you come into the league you want to pass the puck away. But when you gel more confident confident you think you can carry it more like you used to (in minor hockey)," lie says. The win moved the I0-7- 4-0 Eagles into a fifth place tie with the I1-7-1-!
