At 9:10 p.m., Durham Regional Police were called to SmokyLand variety at 1413 King St. E. Four men entered the store wearing ski masks and demanded money from the man working behind the counter. At first, the man thought it was a prank, police said. He told the youths there was no money in the till. One then came at him, swinging a blue aluminum baseball bat towards his head. The man raised his left arm to protect himself and the bat hit his arm and cheekbone, police said. The man then lunged for the panic alarm, which he was able to activate. The youths took off and the man chased them towards the back of the plaza. They are described as wearing sweaters, no coats and black or blue jeans. The man had a small cut on his left forearm and near his eye.
