PAGE 6THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 30, 2003 www.durhamregion.com Final bell rings at Lord Elgin Public School BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer BOWMAN VILLE - Students from Lord Elgin Public School will find themselves in a new building building next September. The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has held a final vote to close the Elgin Street school in June, and move its students to the new Harold Long- worth Public School on Longworth Avenue. The school is currently home to 285 full-time equivalent students, though it was only built for 180. The overflow is currently housed in portables on the school groiinds. Harold Longworth, which is scheduled scheduled to open in September, would have housed Lord Elgin's excess capacity starting next year. Claringlon trustee Nancy Coffin says she has mixed emotions about the closure. "It will remove students from five portables and that's always a good thing," says Ms. Coffin, noting the new school will have a number of amenities not available at Lord Elgin, including including a full-sized library, a larger gym, and wheelchair wheelchair accessibility. But, there are also drawbacks, she says. "The disadvantage is that all the (former Lord Elgin) students will have to be bused, and with the growth in the north end of Bow- manville, we can't guarantee guarantee we won't be moving those students from Harold Longworth to another new facility," she says. But given a number of funding issues, the board has no choice but to close Lord Elgin, says Ms. Coffin. Coffin. Along with Lord Elgin, the board voted to close two other schools, both in Peterborough. Peterborough. The decisions are difficult, but come after extensive extensive public consultation, says board chairman Angela Lloyd. "It's important to note, however, that each of the closures approved... will result result in students being housed in newer, more modern modern facilities, planned and built with the latest curriculum curriculum requirements and technology technology in mind. We see that as a significant benefit for students," says Ms. Lloyd.
