Australia V ;7:30 p.m.: Canada vs. Iroquois 0 ; (Games at Civic Auditorium) Canada is seeking revenge Looking for gold at World Indoor Lacrosse Championships BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer OSHAWA - Canada's entry at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship is counting on revenge to seivc as a litige motivating factor. That seems to be the underlying theme of the event that gets under way at Oshawa's Civic Auditorium Thursday and continues Friday with round-robin games being played between six competing competing countries. While there is representation from Scotland, Australia, Czech Republic and Iroquois Nation, the gold medal game is expected to feature Canada and the United United Slates. That anticipated matchup would suit the Canadian players just fine, says Oshawa's Oshawa's Steve Toll, who is one of 23 players players on the national team roster. Included in the Canadian mix are nine players from the Toronto Rock, who won a National Lacrosse League championship with an 8-6 decision over the Rochester Knighthawks in the final. Toll says thé winning attitude that exists exists between his Rock teammates on the Canadian team, coupled with getting another another crack at the United States in the worlds, will provide a huge boost. "There won't be much of a letdown," says Toll of playing in two premier championships so closely together. "Because "Because so many of us play together on the Steve Toll: 'The United States beat us in the Heritage Cup and I know the boys are still not happy about that.' Rock, that will help us rather than hurt us. 'The United Slates beat us in the Heritage Heritage Cup and I know (lie boys are still not happy about that." The Heritage Cup was played in Mississauga Mississauga last October in front of 3,800 fans and served as a prelude to the worlds. Despite being heavily favoured, Canada was humbled 21-16. While the two powerhouses are expected expected to advance to the finals May 24 in Hamilton, the oilier four entrants could bring an clement of surprise to the inaugural inaugural event. "We haven't heard much about the other teams, and that's a scaty thing," says the 28-year-old Toll, who is an education education assistant at Central Collegiate in Oshawa. "With the Rock we are so well prepared for the other teams and know all of their tendencies. We don't have that (at the worlds) so wc will have to wait and see what happens." Teams will play five round-robin games each, with the event kicking off Thursday in Oshawa with Iroquois and Scotland playing at noon, followed by the United States and Czech Republic at 4 p.m. and Canada against Australia at 7:30 p.m. Friday, at noon, 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively, the Czecli Republic faces Scotland, the United States meets Australia Australia and Canada battles Iroquois Nation to close out the day. Games will shift to the Hershey Centre in Mississauga and then Kitchener's Memorial Auditorium, culminating in the bronze and gold medal games in Hamilton. Toll is expected to be a major contributor contributor to the Canadian team has following following a strong NLL season in which he registered 27 goals and 26 assists in 16 games. In two playoff games, he led the Rock with 3-5-8 totals, including a pair of shorthanded goals in the championship championship game against Rochester. B University of Ontario Institute of Technology Mm WÆÊËêL The Comfort Zone by Glenn Trider What types of pools are there? With the long, hot summer of last year still on many people's minds the idea of installing a pool in your backyard is definitely on the "to do list". You can install an inground or above ground type. Inground pools are broken down into Vinyl Lined, Concrete & Fiberglass. Vinyl Lined: Over $195 million dollars in pools were installed in Ontario in 2002. Over 2/3 were vinyl lined pools. These are the least expensive of all the inground types & come in all shapes and sizes. They are constructed of steel or PVC walls & usually with a concrete bottom. Tlie vinyl liner is stretched across and formed into place before the water is added.Tic huge variety of colors & patterns plus lower cost makes them very popular. Concrete Pools: offer more durability and strength. You can't cut the liner as there is no liner and the lifetime of these pools are longer than vinyl lined. Almost all commercial & municipal pools are made like this. Tic cost is somewhat higher to make, however, tiie end result is very impressive. Different marble like finishes are available. Fiberglass Pools: represent a tiny pool fraction of the Ontario pool construction. Although they arc available in different shapes and types, I am not aware of any Canadian manufacturers. Some American manufacturers are represented here and the cost falls in between the vinyl & concrete. Care in the ground digout must be exercised with these to avoid stresses on the pool as it is made in one piece. It requires a large crane to carry it over your house & in place. Above Ground Pools: Tie easiest to Install and the least expensive. They are available in round or rectangular versions. They are also the easiest pools to remove should they not he wanted anymore. If not installed tastefully they can actually downgrade a home's resale value, so thought should he used when planning on these pools for a long term change in your backyard. Ttese pools are not meant for diving. What type is lx-st for you? This depends on your income and the resale value of your home. Traditionally more expensive homes & higher income people want the Inground types, whereas people with smaller homes or lower income levels do not see the investment worthwhile and go with the above ground types. In any case having a pool on a hot summer day Is a lot of fun!
