The Dodgers swept the St. Thomas Storm in their Intercounty Baseball League home opener doubleheadcr Saturday at Kinsmen Stadium, but fell a run short Sunday at Christie Pits against the defending champion Toronto Maple Leafs. The Dodgers beat St. Thomas 8-7 in the first game of their doubleheader, bouncing back from 6-0 deficit after the first two innings. In the second game, Oshawa took control and calmed the Storm with a 6- 1 victory. A hit in the bottom of the ninth by the Maple Leafs broke the 1-1 tie and lifted Toronto over the Dodgers Sunday. Sunday. After falling behind by six runs in their first game of the season, the Dodgers climbed back to even the score after six innings and an hour- long rain delay. In the seventh, Os- hawa's Jeremy Martin blasted a triple and teammate Mick Kurhan hit a sac rifice fly to plate Martin with the winning winning run. "It shows you what kind of heart this team has, to come back from 6-0 to win," says Dodgers coach Gary Mi- nacs. "Last year down 6-0 we would have ended up losing the game 8-2." The Dodgers Tony Quick had four walks, two stolen bases and scored three times, Darryl Reid went two-for- two with two walks, Ken Calway had three RBI, Kurhan two RBI and Ja- maal Joseph got the pitching decision. In the second game, the Dodgers scored three runs in the first and three in the third en route to a 6-1 victory. Kurhan had an RBI single and a two-run homer, Martin had two doubles doubles and the Dodgers got great pitching pitching from MattTosoni, Chad Stone and Ben Chisholm. Stone was credited with the pitching win. In the Dodgers first road game, a hit in the bottom of the ninth by the Maple Leafs cost Oshawa the game. Former Toronto Blue Jay Paul Spoljarijc started the game for Toronto and pitched three scoreless innings, frustrating Dodger batters. Toronto scored in the fourth, Oshawa tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single from Martin, and with two out in the ninth Toronto's Mike Reid drove in the game winning run for a 2-1 Toronto victory. "We were right there all game," says Troy May, manager and owner of the Dodgers. "It shows we can play with any team in the league this year." The Dodgers next game is Saturday, Saturday, May 17 at Kinsmen Stadium at 2 p.m. against Waterloo.
