The library opened to the public last week. Book time to see library BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - At four times the size of its predecessor, predecessor, with 30,000 new books and improved collections of other items, the new Bowmanville Bowmanville branch of the Clarington Clarington Public Library opened its doors to the public for the first time this week. The 22,000-square-foot library library boasts two full floors plus a mezzanine, complete with a separate quiet study room with tables that have ports for computer computer cables to reach power sources on the floor. Scattered throughout the library library are a considerable number number of reading areas, furnished with comfortable leather chairs. Colours used throughout throughout the new space are warm and inviting. On the upper floor, near the adult mystery area, is a fireplace surrounded by chairs for people to curl up in. "No matter how many people people are here, there's always a chair tucked somewhere," says Darlene McCann, CPL's co-ordinator co-ordinator of circulation services. The whole environment is comfortable, agrees a col league. "It's not just a place you can come and take a book out. You should be able to come and spend a couple of hours here," says Linda Del Grande, CPL's manager of library services. The old branch, at 62 Temperance Temperance St., closed for two weeks, starting on Easter weekend, weekend, to allow staff time to move into their new digs, which is located located in the new addition to Clarington's Municipal Administrative Administrative Centre. Clarington council recently decided to grant the former library space to the Bowmanville Museum. The new space much better suits Clarington's needs, says Ms. Del Grande. "We had outgrown our old location at least five or six years ago," she notes, indicating indicating the new site contains a great deal more space for expanded library programs for people of all ages. "We will offer more adult programs. The old branch had no space- at all for adult programs," programs," says Ms. Del Grande. The new site will make a huge difference for Clarington library library users, she says. "We really have changed the whole concept of library services services in Clarington. We opened here prepared to offer a much higher level of service," she says. "I think, visually, the public public expectation will be higher and I think we're ready." As well as all the regular library library services, a coffee kiosk, which will serve coffee, juices, and possibly fight snacks, is expected expected to open in coming weeks, says Clarington community community services director Joe Caruana. The matter is awaiting awaiting final council approval, which is expected before the library's library's official grand opening May 24. There's no concern the opening of the new branch will detract from usage of branches in Newcastle, Courtice and Orono. "Each community really appreciates appreciates their own branch," says Ms. Del Grande, noting the opening of the new site will in at least one major way help the satellite branches. "Because we rotate a lot of collections, having more titles means we'll be able to rotate what we have here," she says.
