A lot of people have come in this week wanting chlorine but do not realize this is only part of keeping up your pool. When opening your pool, make sure you pump off or discard the surface water floating on the winter cover. If this is instead dumped into your pool, it will take longer to get your pool water balanced. After opening your pool, vacuum off any dirt or debris that has fallen to the bottom. After this, super chlorine or shock it to get rid of organic & bacterial growth, 'then vacuum any debris & take a water test. Ideally, your water should have a I'll of 7.-i - 7.6 & a total alkalinity of 100 - 125 ppm. If I'll is below 7.4, then your water is on the corrosive side meaning that stainless steel & other metal objects in the pool may exhibit corrosion, staining or discoloration. If I'll is about 8.0, then calcium carbonate will begin to precipitate out causing pool water to become cloudy or dull looking. Scaling is as bad as corrosive water, so it's best to keep the water balanced. As far as sanitizers go, let's look at different types & why you need chlorine in a pool. Simply, micro organisms end up in pool water due to surface contamination and also front people in the water. Without some way to keep their organics in check, the pool will soon go dull, listless X cloudy & grow algae, bacterial growth can cause sickness if inhaled or digested. Types of Chlorine: The following arc unslabilizcd chlorines. 1) liquid chlorine 2) calcium hypachlorite or (shock) granular chlorine. These chlorines react to organics but lack a built-in stabilizer.Tliey burn off into the atmosphere quickly with sunlight if there is insufficient stabilizer. If you are going to use these you must dump Mursatt pool stabilizer in the pool. If you don't stabilize pool water, then you will go through large amounts of granular or liquid chlorine. The advantage of these types of chlorine are that they are low cost, however, it's important to use Meusatt pool stabilizer at the start of the season X it will keep your chlorine working 3 - -i times longer. Stabilized Chlorines: These include: A) Mursatt Sta-chlor which is a white granular powder, soluable in pool.water X can be added to skimmer basket or directly to pool. li) Mursatt Chlorine pucks also known as Tri-chlor can he added directly to the skimmer basket or used in automatic chlorination units. These chlorines are the most costly, but the easiest to handle X the most convenient. Comfort Shoppe sells them for $39.95. You will need 50 grams of tablets per 50,000 L. of pool water. If you have any problems with your pool water just bring in sample X we will analyze it.
