Solar race car rolls into Clarington Pit stop made to share latest technology that went into making car that reaches top speeds of 125 km/hr BY ALEXIS SCIUK Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - The Queen's University Solar Race Vehicle and Team was on hand recently at the Clarington Municipal Municipal Centre to share information information on the technology that went into making Canada's first two-seater solar car. The 900-pound solar car is made out of carbon fibre and gallium arsinide and can reach speeds of up to 125 km/hr. Seventeen Queen's students make up the Solar Team and travel and race the car during the summer months. That number grows to 100 student student volunteers during the school year and incorporates incorporates participants from all years and faculties. Adam Gauci, a second- year computer engineer, said there are several factors factors that the students think about when building the solar car. "It has to be very lightweight, lightweight, aerodynamic and energy efficient and it has to be safe because it rides on the highways," lie says. The team will be racing the car at least twice in the upcoming months, once in the American Solar Challenge, Challenge, which leaves from Chicago and ends in Los Angeles. The second event is the World Solar Challenge Challenge in Australia where the team will race the car from Darwin on the north coast to Adelaide in the south. "There are a lot of dedicated dedicated students who give up a lot of their time to build solar cars and to race them and to promote green energy," energy," said Mr. Gauci. "It is great because this car will never have to go to a gas station and it has no emissions emissions whatsoever." The team prides itself on creating viable energy sources that can help create create systems, which build environmentally friendly renewable energy. "I am really proud to be a member of the solar car team," said Mr. Gauci. "I like the fact that we are showing off engineering and we are also showing off a viable energy source." Kim Parnell, a fourth- year commerce student, is the business leader for the team. "It is quite a challenging challenging job," said Ms. Parnell. "The solar cells themselves themselves are worth about $100 US each and there are 3,500 of them on the car." Ms. Parnell said her job consists of collecting and maintaining sponsors, organizing finances and promoting clean energy. Tai Heng is one of the drivers of the solar car. Mr. Heng is a third-year computer computer engineer and said that driving the car is "a pretty interesting experience." experience." The car is designed to fit a driver who is no taller than 5-foot-8, and according according to Mr. Heng, who is a perfect fit, "if you are any taller it. becomes really un comfortable in there." Mr. Heng loves driving the car and said that driving 125 km/h can feel really really fast. "[The car] can get going quite fast and it feels a lot faster than it is actually going." Mr. Heng explained explained that in order to drive the car he must lay down on his back with only his head supported so that he can see out of the windshield. Andrew Randcll, an OAC student at Courtice High School, had a chance to check out the car. "I think it is really really neat. 1 was over there looking at it. There is a lot of technology and a lot of hours put into it." Andrew is one of a group of students at Courtice High School who have created an electric car. "It is a different technology, they are using solar technology and we are using strictly batteries and electricity," said Andrew. Despite the differences between the two cars Andrew still thought solar energy was "really cool." The Queen's Solar Car Team uses its knowledge to help build systems for hybrid electric cars but admit that they still have a way to go for solar cars to become a common feature on the roads. WALTER PASSARELLA/ Statesman photo Tai Heng, a third-year computer engineering student at Queen's University, is one driver of the solar powered car that sports 3,500 power cells at a cost of $100 each. The car made a stop in Bowmanville recently.
