PAGE 12THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 9,2003 Œije Canadian Statesman www.durhamregion.com Clarington's Award-Winning Newspaper Since 1854 July 9,2003 infodurhammgioii.com Brian Legree Sports Editor blegrcc@dtirltamrcgion.com Gillespie wedges his way onto Nationwide Tour Derek Gillespie may be the leading leading money winner on the Canadian Tour so far this season, but it won't necessarily bother him if he's not No. 1 by the end of the year. In fact, it wouldn't bug him if he doesn't play another Canadian Tour event all season. That's because the Oshawa native, native, who finished in a tie for fourth in last weekend's Samsung Canadian Canadian PGA Championship at Dia- mondBack in Richmond Hill, has wedged his way into conditional status on the Nationwide Tour, a step below his ultimate goal - the PGA Tour. Gillespie's 70-69-69-69-277 performance not only provided him a cheque worth $16,965, but by virtue of finishing in the top-25, he gained automatic entry into the next stop on the Nationwide Tour, the Reese's Cup Classic in Her- shey, Pa., which gets under way Thursday. "I hit the ball really well on the Mgjjjjjj|id, just didn't putt as well as. says Gillespie. « - '-'•"'Uy putting kind of let me down on the weekend. But overall I was pretty solid tee to green. Nothing spectacular, just got the job done." The Canadian PGA is now part of the U.S.-based Nationwide Tour and several Canadian Tour regulars were given invitations to compete in the event. "I knew it was a good opportunity opportunity to do something because a lot of the (Nationwide) guys weren't coming up because of SARS, so it was a good opportunity to have a good week." Gillespie, who sits atop the Canadian Tour's order of merit with $34,816 in five tournaments, jumped 150 spots to 101st on the Nationwide money list courtesy his showing at the Samsung Canadian PGA Championship. In order to stick on the Nationwide Nationwide Tour, he'll have to continue to post top-25 finishes until he has enough earnings to gain full status on the tour. "It's no surprise to me that I came fourth," says Gillespie, alluding alluding to his strong play all season, which includes a Canadian Tour win at a stop in Mexico. "I know I can play, or win, at that level. I've made the cut in three of four PGA events, I have to get there, that's the challenge." That's why Gillespie gladly accepted accepted the opportunity to play in this weekend's Nationwide stop, opting out of the Canadian Tour's MTS Classic in Winnipeg. After all, the Reese's Cup Classic Classic offers a purse of $450,000, three times that up for grabs in Winnipeg, not including exchange rates. "Who wants to play on the Canadian Tour when you can play out here?," says Gillespie. "The money's terrible (on the Canadian Tour). The courses aren't very good and nobody watches." Gillespie says he doesn't feel any extra pressure that comes with the expectation from golf fans and the national media that lie may be the next Canadian to play - and succeed succeed - on the PGA Tour. "No not at all," he says when asked if he feels any extra burden. "I'm just concerned with my game and what I have to do to gel to the PGA Tour. "People can say what they want, hut I'm the one hitting the shots and have to earn that spot." The penalty-plagued Gaels were eliminated from the playoffs after losing 7-3. Early for uni 'We probably got what we deserved' says coach Corny Derks BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - Clarington Green Gaels coach Corny Derks preached to his JuniorB lacrosse club that the key to getting through the first round of playoffs was to play with discipline. discipline. His team didn't buy the sermon. On a night when the Green Gaels were desperate for a win to force a fifth and deciding game back in Mimico, the only trip they took was to the penalty box. And they gathered enough frequent flyer points to earn a summer vacation. With a total lack of discipline and disregard for the situation they were in, the Green Gaels were humbled 7-3 Friday Friday night at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, bowing out of the besl-of-five Eastern Conference quarterfinal 3-1 to the Mountaineers. Penally trouble plagued the Green Gaels throughout the short scries, and the final game was a fine example of what can happen when there are more ,10:30 A.M. "In the Vecond period we took six or eight minutes in a row, were down two men a lot. It (playing with discipline) just didn't sink in and it was mostly the veterans who were getting the penalties. There was a little bit of frustration, and the next thing you know we were getting double minors and misconducts and it just ruins the flow of the game. "It was 2-1 (for Mimico) at the end of the first period and it was ours to take. It just didn't happen." The end was disappointing for the Green Gaels, who entered the season as defending Founder's Cup national champions after a Cinderella-like playoff playoff last season that included winning three series in the deciding game. There was to be none of that magic this year, just a quick disappearing act. "I think we probably got what we mJvèrtising FLEERS To have your flyers delivered by Durham's #1 Carrier Force! "Yes, this is the defending Founder's champ, but the reality is we only had six players on the floor that played on last year's team. With a little bit of luck we could have won that series. series. If we would have won that first game (a 7-6 loss), it would have changed the whole thing." While penalties contributed to their demise, the Green Gaels also suffered from a lack of offence. In the final game of the series, they managed just one goal through the first two periods, trailing 2-1 after the first and 6-1 after two. Part of the problem stemmed from the absence of James Barton, who was injured late in the season and was unavailable, unavailable, and Jim Mumford, who was away at a field lacrosse tournament in Colorado. "The biggest problem is we needed some more goal scorers," said Derks. "We had our second (Mumford) and third (Barton) top scorers not playing. Those are two of our key guys on the power play. : That's whgt.JjtrçpjsÙQç .offence. .offence. We haven't been a high scoring team all year. They graduate due to age next season...In season...In the third period of Friday's final game of the series, the Green Gaels had 13 minor penalties, one major for fighting (Jeff Tsuji), a match penalty (Nate Cotter), a misconduct (Steve Hutchins) and two game misconducts misconducts (Tsuji and Chris Stewart).
