www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 9,2003 PAGE 13 Toros offering five more teams Additional entry teams will complement existing A and AAA programs BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer CLARINGTON - For every action, there is a reaction. That might best describe what the Clarington Recreational Hockey League will be doing for the 2003-2004 season in response to some changes under way in the Clarington Minor Hockey Association. Association. With two new pads on board this fall with the completion of the South Cour- tice Arena, tire extra ice time will allow the Clarington Toros to offer additional entry teams (minor and major age mix) in the novice through midget age divisions. divisions. The five new teams will complement complement the existing A and AAA programs already offered. With the bulk of the players on the AE Toro teams expected to be major age, the CRHL has countered by deciding deciding to limit their select teams to minor aged players only. "With the extra players moving up to the Toros, we had to re-examine our select select program," says CRHL president Scott Brunt. "Technically, the additional entry teams will take the place of our select program, so we had to investigate a change." The minor select teams will operate in the atom to midget age divisions. In tyke, there will be two select teams offered, offered, both major aged, because the Toros don't currently offer rep hockey at that level. Novice will be without a select select team because players are in that age group for just one season, and offering a select team in addition to the three in rep would hinder the numbers left for house league. The new structure from top to bottom will offer hockey at all levels for Clarington Clarington players. "We will be able to offer a full spectrum spectrum of hockey for kids at all levels. The minor select teams will help fill a gap," says Brunt. Tryouts for the select teams in the York-Simcoe league will begin following following Labour Day, with the house league scheduled to start two weeks later. Anyone interested in applying to coach the select teams can call the CRHL office 905-623-3001. Brunt estimates 1,800 players will be enrolled in house league this season, adding that 80 per cent of the games will be played at the South Courtice Arena. He expects Courtice will become the centre of operations for the CRHL, with a staffed office location and equipment storage facility on site. Executive meetings, meetings, held previously in Bowmanville, will shift to the new arena as well, he adds. Scott Brunt: 'We had to re-examine re-examine our select program.'
