The topper for the 19-year-old member of the University of Toronto Toronto Track and Field Team was defeating defeating familiar rival and friend Cameron Sahadath of Brooklin in the final of the 110-metre hurdles. Sahadath defeated Martin -- who injured his hamstring early in the race -- for the 2003 Ontario Federation of School Athletics Association Association (OFSAA) 110m hurdles crown. It was the only blemish on what has been a remarkable season on the track. It was a repeat gold medal for Martin in the 110m hurdles at the junior nationals, winning the event in a time of 14.31 seconds, just ahead of second-place Sahadath, who was clocked in 14.69 seconds. Martin also won the 11 Om hurdles hurdles crown in 2002. Three other Durham Region athletes athletes were crowned national junior champions at the meet. Oshawa's Patricia Mayers ran the 400-metres in 54.72 seconds to continue her dominance in the event. She recently wrapped up a stellar high school career at East- dale Collegiate by winning OFSAA in both the 400m and 200m, and will head to the University of Nebraska Nebraska on scholarship this fall. Bowmanvillc's Mark Dillon, equally dominant in the high jump, won that event with a 2.06m leap. He is off to the University of Toronto in the fall. Whitby's Mary Egbo-Egbo easily easily outdistanced the competition in the triple jump with an 11.95m bound. There was some concern over whether Martin should compete at the junior nationals. l ie was cautioned by physiotherapist physiotherapist Ed Ratz to forego the junior nationals as his hamstring was still not 100-per cent healed after only four weeks of treatment following his injury. "I only had a month of physio and it usually takes two months to be fully rehabilitated," says Martin. Confident his leg would hold together, together, Martin decided to risk further further injury to run at the junior nationals. nationals. lie's glad he did, "I basically made up my mind I was going to run," says Martin, an OAC graduate from Fine Ridge Secondary School.
