And it's proven true. But veteran Chris Beckford- Tseu was supposed to be the one bailing the Generals out, not a pair of unproven 18-year- olds. Just a month after Beckford- Tseu was traded to Kingston, he's already a forgotten man thanks to the play of Dan Tur- ple, who came over from the Frontenacs in the deal, and rookie Ryan Gibb, whose superb superb play made Beckford-Tseu expendable in the first place. Turple made 48 saves as the Generals stole a 3-2 decision from the Sudbury Wolves Sunday Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game weekend sweep on the road and vaulting the Generals Generals into first place in the OHL's East Division with a 10- 12-5-1 record. Gibb stopped 34 pucks the night before in Barrie, as the Generals downed the Colts 2-1 in overtime. "I'm pleased that we've got two guys who have two or three George Burnett years ahead of them in the league," Generals' coach George Burnett says of bis new tandem. "They're supporting each other well... They both want to play, but it's a positive situation." Turple now has a 3-1-1 record, 2.04 goals-against average average and .939 save percentage in six appearances with Oshawa. Gibb is 6-7-2 with a 2.95 GAA and .905 percentage. percentage. Burnett says he will probably probably continue rotating between between the two until such time one proves he's deserving of the No. 1 role. He expects both will see action this weekend, as the Generals host the Eastern Conference-leading Conference-leading Mississauga IceDogs (14-7-3-1) Friday at 7:35 p.m. and the Peterborough Petes (10-11-1-2) Sunday at 7 p.m. The Generals will welcome another new player to the fold Friday after acquiring overage right-winger Ryan Bowness from the Brampton Battalion Monday in exchange for over- ager Aaron Lobb and the rights to NCAA player Luch Aquino. Bowness, who was Brampton's Brampton's captain, had 4-6-10 numbers numbers in 13 games with the Battalion Battalion this season. "He's a big, strong, tough Ben Eager and Paul Ranger passed over for national team Ben Eager and Paul Ranger have every right to be disappointed. But they should be given exactly one more day to get over it. Although both are smarting smarting after not being invited to Canada's selection camp for the upcoming world junior hockey championships, they need to put their focus back on the ice beginning Friday - no matter how badly they wanted to wear the red and white Maple Leaf. After all, they still have a lot to play for, not the least of which being a surprisingly surprisingly competitive Oshawa Generals Generals team, one that will be trying to keep its hold on first place in the OHL's East Division when the Mississauga Mississauga IceDogs come to town Friday night. Beyond that, both are still trying to make an impression impression on the National Hockey League teams that drafted them last year. Eager is a first-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes and Ranger a sixth rounder of the Tampa Bay Lightning. George Burnett, Os- hawa's head coach and general general manager, was more than willing to part with his top forward and top defenceman for the better part of a month. And he believes they earned invitations to the 34- player camp being held in Kitchener Dec. 11-18. "I'm extremely surprised," surprised," says Burnett. "I'm very disappointed for both of them. 1 know how hard they worked to be a part of it. I'm a little shocked." But now that he has his two star players at his dis- Brian McNair Sta ff Editor ImcnairtihlurliaiHivgioH.coni posai for the entire season, he fully expects to see the same kind of effort he has already witnessed. "I think they should be disappointed, but I think that they have to channel that in a positive direction," Burnett says. "In the bigger picture, it's a contract year for both of them and they have long professional careers ahead of them." Eager, in particular, has shown an ability to compete at the highest possible level. He's an intimidating 6-l'oot- 2, 220-pound winger with NHL speed. His hands and temper still leave a little to be desired, but lie's made a concerted effort to improve both this season. In addition to leading the Generals with 9-16-25 numbers numbers in 27 games this season, season, Eager, when surrounded surrounded by more talent, was the best player on the ice in a 7- 1 win for the OHL all-stars over a Russian select team last month. "For 30 games, lie's absolutely absolutely been our best player and lie's played with discipline," discipline," Burnett says of Eager, who nevertheless still leads the Generals with 86 penally minutes. The trick now for Eager will he to vent his frustration in the right way. 'flic success of the Generals Generals may depend on it, Three wins for Artisan CLARINGTON - It was another high intensity week for the Claringlon Artisan Artisan Complete Toros minor atom team, as it added three more victories to defend its first place standing in the Eastern AAA League. For the week, Garrett Hooey scored live goals, Ryan Nichols added three, Urodie Ttillon two, Travis Owens two, Brandon Slaal two, Taylor Fielding one and Logan Walters one. The Toros heal Peterborough Peterborough 5-2, Oshawa 5-3 and Richmond Hill 7-4. Assists were earned by Nichols with six. Hooey with three, ('oily Mint/, and Fielding with two each, Ttillon and Logan Walters one each, guy who's got some good skating skating ability," says Burnett. "He's got the potential and lie's proven he can score in this league." Aquino had indicated he would never play for the Generals, Generals, as there is apparently some lingering ill will over the plight of his brother, Anthony, last season. Anthony left his final year of NCAA hockey to play for the Generals, and played well for 14 games, but was deemed by a court not to be eligible eligible due to an OHL rule prohibiting prohibiting 20-year-old rookies. "Should Luch play in Brampton, I think we're compensated compensated well," Burnett says. Luch Aquino was selected by the Generals in the eighth round of the 2001 OHL draft. GENERALLY SPEAKING: SPEAKING: Whitby's Brandon McBride is starting to settle nicely into a Generals' uniform since the trade from Kingston. He scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season Sunday, including including the winner with 2:22 remaining. Ben Eager (9th) scored the other, while Adam Bcrti picked up three assists... Chris Hulit (9th) scored the winner in Barrie, a breakaway goal 2:59 into overtime. Justin Donati scored the other Oshawa Oshawa goal...
