These SEEDS don't require any planting, just a little free time from someone who wants to help children succeed. SEEDS is a new volunteer recruitment recruitment program being launched by the board in Clarington. SEEDS stands for students enjoying education arc destined to succeed and is based on the idea that education and student success are shared responsibilities. "This program was launched to help students achieve and everyone has something to give." said Judy Malfara. communications officer with the hoard. She is a SEEDS volunteer. The program began last year when Avis Glaze, the director of education, challenged the education centre staff to spend half a day per month volunteering volunteering in the schools. Many staff members took up the challenge. Ms. Malfara helped a Grade 10 student write the literacy test since he couldn't do it due to a broken wrist. "People who have been out in the school love it." she said. The program opened up to people from the Peterborough community last spring and in October members of the Northumberland community were invited to participate. "Avis decided, given the success and the interest, to open up SEEDS to the community," Ms. Malfara said. "Given the personal satisfaction our employees derived from spending time with students, we were delighted to expand SEEDS to the community," Ms. Glaze said. The Clarington launch was held at Bowmanville High School last night. "We're reaching out to the community to ask people to help us," Ms. Malfara said. She said this would add to the volunteer ranks already in the schools - both elementary elementary and sectary sectary oiidary. Polonsky The principal assigns assigns the volunteer where they are needed - ranging from mentoring to tutoring or if the volunteer volunteer has a unique talent they can share. Volunteers can decide how much time they want to give, which school they want to volunteer at and what grade they are interested in. . Tuesday's launch features guest speaker Gary Polonsky, president of Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Bowmanville Bowmanville H.S. is located at 49 Liberty St. N.
