page 2THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, March 3,2004 www.durtiamregion.com ftfO Uri-sZ CMingtoa Leading the Way ^ 905-623-3379 Mayor's Corner Every year, around this time, residents ask me about their taxes and how the Municipality uses them. I think with my experience as Chair of both the Region of Durham's and Clarington's Finance Department that i am uniquely, qualified to answer these questions. 'V Did you know that on average, 26% of the taxes you pay are used to provide services and programs in Clarington. For the average taxpayer, who owns a house with an assessed value of $ 179,000 this amounts to approximately $ 708,00 per year. The balance of the taxes paid is submitted to the Region of Durham (44% or about $ 1,198.10) and your selected District School Board (30% or about $ 816.90). In 2003, Clarington's total operating budget was approximately $ 35 million. Here is how that $708.00 is spent: General Government, $219.48 Libraries, museums $42.48 Planning/Zoning $42.48 Roads/Park Maintenance, $226.56 Fire Protection, $84.95 Recreation Services, $92.04 Property taxes pay for 46% of the total municipal capital and operating budgets, The rest of the required funding is raised through the application of user fees, reserves and ■reserve funds (the use of these is restricted and specific), licenses, permits, development charges; interest and other forms of revenue. You can find information about your taxes and how they are calculated on the Municipality's web site: http://www.municipalitv.clarinoton.on.ca or you can contact the Clarington Finance Department by telephone at 905-623-3379 or by email at: finance@municipalitv.clarinqt.on.on.ca info@m unici pality.clarington .on .ca March Break History Camp 2004 at Clarington Museums at the Museums for a fun-filled day while learning about your local history!
