Steve Cooke's second goal of the night came with 3:09 remaining and lifted the Dukes to a 3-2 win over the Eagles in Game 6 of their Provincial Junior A Hockey League East Conference Conference final last night. Game 7 goes tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Wellington, with the winner advancing to a best-of-seven league semifinal against the St. Michael's Buzzers. "That's a tough one. There wasn't much difference. We knew they weren't going to roll over," Eagles coach Curtis Hodgins .said after the game. "If anybody asked us at the beginning beginning of the season if we'd take a Game 7 in the final against Wellington, we'd take it. We've proven we can win in that rink." Having stolen home ice advantage away with a 3-1 win in Wellington Sunday, the Eagles were looking to wrap the series up before an enthusiastic enthusiastic packed house at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. But Cooke and Oshawa native Brent Varty had other plans, each picking up three points in the game for Wellington. Wellington. Matt Caruana (7th) opened the scoring scoring for the Eagles with a power-play goal 11:33 into the game, but Varty evened matters for the Dukes with 3:33 left in the period. The teams exchanged power-play tallies in the second period, with Cooke scoring 14 seconds in and Jeff Oke (4th) replying for the Eagles with an unassisted effort at 16:28. It helped atone for three earlier penalties assessed assessed to Oke. The Eagles (31-10-4-4) finished second, to the Dukes (37-5-3-4) during the regular season, but matched up well in head-to-head play, winning three of six games. It comes as little surprise, then, that this series will go the limit. Bowmanville swept both Syracuse and Cobourg to reach the conference final, while Wellington needed five games against Peterborough and seven against Kingston/ The awaiting Buzzers (33-13-1-2) have yet to be tested, sweeping Buffalo and. Markham and needing just live games against North York in the South Conference. In the other league semifinal, the Aurora Tigers (47-2-0-0) will square off with the Oakville Blades (32-13-3- 1). • NOTES: The Eagles took a 3-2 series series lead with a 3-1 win in Wellington Sunday. Brad Dormiedy scored twice, once into an empty net, and David Smith had the other Bowmanville goal. Dan Goulding carried a shutout into the final minute, but Wellington's Derek Smith scored with 44 seconds . remaining.
