Walter Passarella/The Canadian Statesman From left, Bowmanville High School students Megan Philip, Katie Cameron, Carly Hall, Eric Gibson and Paul Bridger learned to play an active role in municipal politics, thanks to an assignment from their teacher David Rempel. Mayor lends an ear to high school students BY SHELLEY JORDAN Staff writer BOWMANVILLE -- Local high school students recently learned that when 'they talk, Municipal council listens. During a visit early last month to Municipal, council, a Bowmanville High School Grade 10 Civics class wgs invited by Mayor John Mutton to address student concerns to the Mu- n|ioipality. Though teacher David Rempel did . not make it mandatory for .students to respond to ,the mayor's offer, an e-mail address was provided for any pupil who wanted to .make a submission. , ■ .. Much to their surprise and delight, five students who took the mayor at his word found their e-mailed ideas printed on the Clarington council agendaifor Marclr22. ***«» 1)1 ■ 1 " "Ldidif fthi'nkHe'd read ifbecause it was from a teen and he's (Mayor' Mutton) a very busy man," said student student Carly Hall, 15. Carly's letter suggested the Municipality Municipality find another location for the youth recreation centre because, she says, the present site in the fire hall is too small. Eric Gibson, 16, who requested the Municipality create a beach'area in Bowmanville, said he was glad the mayor didn't read his suggestion and then throw it away. "It will be nice to see what happens," happens," said Eric. Another letter from Jenn Bondi, 16, suggested one-way traffic for King Street, while Megan Philipp, Jake Jury and Katie Cameron, all 15, suggested improvements for Bowmanville Bowmanville such as a bird sanctuary to increase biodiversity, a new book store to improve literacy, better road maintenance to improve transportation transportation and a farmer's market in the downtown area to increase revenue. Jenn said having her concerns taken seriously makes her feel like her input means something, though she said* she was a bit concerned the "'mayor didn't seem to care much' when she met him. "Maybe he was just having a bad day or something," said Jenn. Megan said she felt confident the mayor would take the correspon dence of students seriously. "He's the mayor," said Megan. "It's important that he takes everyone's everyone's ideas into consideration." Mayor Mutton said council has implemented ideas based on youth concerns. "We implemented a baby-sitting course and a skate park," said the mayor. "If they've got something they consider to be a legitimate concern, I put it on the council agenda and send it off to staff." The mayor said he believes civics classes are important, but he wants students to understand that just because because an issue, makes it to a member of staff doesn't mean staff is empowered empowered to start action on it. y 4fe e*;® i : Disney Character Watches » Save 30% OFF ■ priced from s 39 99 4M mm \m is 10 Birthstone \r' > Rings * ' Choose Your Genuine , Birthstone with Diamonds mmmmmmr : / ; ■ 1 :v 4 Mon.- Wed. 9am - 6pm Thurs. 9am - 8pm Closed Good Friday Sat. 8am - 5pm Religious ; Jeivellery y . 10 k Crosses •Confirmation I • First Communion • Easter The Birthstone for April - Diamond!
