PAGE 16THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 7,2004 www.durhamregion.com Athletes at the top of their game Durham College honours its best BY JOHN HERRON Special to The Statesman OSHAWA - When a school has as much success as Durham College did this season it's appropriate appropriate that three athletes of the year be chosen rather than the traditional two. Mike Bond (baseball), Erin Smith (fastball and volleyball) and Laura Dixon (soccer) each took home the college's most prestigious award at the 34th Annual Durham College Athletic Athletic Banquet held Friday. "It's a total surprise to me," said an elated Bond. "1 had a feeling I might get MVP for my team but to get athlete of the year, that's a pretty big award. I was shocked." It may have been a surprise to Bond but with an incredible .474 batting average after regular regular season play, lie was an obvious obvious choice to represent the male contingent of athletes. His outstanding defensive abilities at first- base helped complement one of the best bats in all of Canada. Bond became became a folk hero around the college after hitting one of the longest home runs in recent memory at Christie Pits in Toronto. "My home run against George Brown was definitely pretty special," said Bond. "Another "Another great moment was running running the catcher (in a play at the plate) against Ottawa. He and I didn't like each other too much so it was pretty sweet." The first baseman's leadership leadership and perseverance paid off as he led his Durham Lords to a record setting 14-2 season and a trip to the CIBA Nationals in Montreal. His other accolades included a selection to the CIBA Ontario all-star team and the top batter award for Ontario. The men's baseball program will have a huge hole to fill as the mechanical studies student is wrapping up his final year at the college. Enough can't be said about the spectacular season Smith put together on both the pitcher's pitcher's mound on the fastball diamond diamond and in her power position on the volleyball court. The advertising student was the leader of both teams, which not only finished in first place in their respective divisions, but were both undefeated. She was named a CCAA all- Canadian after leading her volleyball volleyball division in scoring and voted MVP in fastball after pitching her team to a gold medal championship. "The people I would like to thank most of all are my coaches," coaches," said Smith. "Stan (Marchut), Jim (Nemish) and all my other coaches were a big help." Nemish, coach of the women's fastball team, is ecstatic ecstatic at the prospect of having his star pitcher back for another season. "She'll be back for her fourth and final year next year are we're definitely looking forward to that," said Nemish. "Hopefully she can keep her in credible string going and bring us another championship." Dixon's 18 goals on the soccer soccer field made the decision to have co-winners of the female MVP award the only possible solution. The mark tied an OCA A record and helped her team storm into the playoffs and capture' the Ontario gold medal. "There were so many amazing amazing memories that happened this year," said Dixon. "The team, coaching staff and therapist therapist were all spectacular." Dixon's outstanding play was a large reason for the soccer soccer team's trip to the National Championship in Coquitlam, B.C., where her team finished fourth. She ' was a CCAA all-star and was voted national player of the year. ( Members of the athletic department department are keeping their fingers fingers crossed the justice studies student will be returning to the college next season. nwmo Ron Pietroniro/ Statesman photo Athletes of the Year at Durham College included, from left, Laura Dixon, Erin Smith and Mike Bond.
