page 2THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, April 7, 2004 www.durtiamregion.com Clanngtm Leading the Way ^ 905-623-3379 ! Mayor's Corner During recent speaking opportunities, opportunities, I have made a number of references to the Municipality's .«s WWÆB renewed commitment to provide excellence' in customer service. I would like to use this Mayor's Corner to tell you about it. To begin with, municipal staff has voluntarily participated in an intensive customer service training training program that they have been able to apply to their individual responsibilities. A prime example of this is the new approach to development approvals that Planning Services, Engineering Services and Building staff has implemented. Collectively this staff group is providing "small town" service by ensuring that staff is more accessible and approachable. By improving the communications between these 3 areas of responsibilities, the Municipality is able to give on time responses to public enquiries. This has also resulted in a more effective consultation consultation process with applicants and has allowed us to address the concerns of all agencies involved in the development approval process. It also has enabled our staff team to identify identify areas of potential problems earlier in the applications process. Perhaps the most significant of improvements is the shared counter for' Planning Services; Engineering Services and the Building Division. Now applicants with simple projects projects can be issued their building permit over the counter with all required sign-offs being completed while they wait. Installation of computers at this counter has made answering questions and providing information much easier. In addition applications status letters are prepared for every file every 60 days. These letters remind all parties involved in a specific application the remaining information and/or municipal concerns concerns that need to be addressed. The Municipality is working hard to ensure that all devel- ■ opment applications are addressed and processed as quickly as possible. Staff is as committed as I am to bring the residents residents and businesses of Clarington the highest possible level of service. When you visit any municipal department, you will see survey cards asking you how we are doing. I encourage you to take one and tell us your thoughts. It is another way to let us give you better, timely service. PITCH-IN CANADA ^ S* Municipality of Clarington ' Clean-up Events Saturday April 24th 8:00 am to 12 noon Join in the fun and take a leisurely walk on the trails and help clean up as you enjoy'the Spring blossom. Bowmanville Valley enter on Roenigk Dr., Bowmanville Could This Happen to You? A Clarington family recently experienced a devastating house fire caused by a clothes dryer. Clarington Emergency & Fire Services would like to remind you of some basic safety precautions for your clbthes dryer. • Empty your lint trap after every load ' • Check your vent piping every three to six months for accumulation accumulation of lint and clean as necessary • Be sure to shut off the appliance when leaving the home • Use metal vent piping rather than the flexible plastic hose. The flex hose is intended to be used for short distances and for the connection of the dryer to a metal vent pipe. Newer model clothes dryers are hotter than older appliances. Heat buildup can cause the lint to catch fire and the fire may go unnoticed until it becomes a large fire. By cleaning your lint trap and vent pipe on a regular schedule, you can reduce the risk of a dryer fire and increase the efficiency of your dryer.
