THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 7,2004 PAGE 7 www.durhamregion.com Police still investigating cause of shooting POLICE from page 1 { t - ' iaggravatcd assault in connection [with the incident. Details of the 'shooting arc still sketchy. I "We're still not sure who was 'the shooter," said Durham Regional Regional Police spokesman Sergeant Paul Malik. I - Police don't know what set off the shooting or how one of 'the suspects ended up being shot, 'he said. . In the meantime, professional Icounsellors.arc being called in to [Durham College and the Univer sity of Ontario Institute of Technology Technology today and tomorrow to help students who may be struggling struggling in the aftermath .of the shooting. There is also a 24-hour help line available, said Kathleen Bain, director of communications communications and marketing. The entire campus was closed to the public Saturday, but classes classes were held Monday. Only the student centre remains closed and will stay that way for most of this week to allow police to conduct their investigation. "It's still pretty early. We haven't made any decisions yet as to how things might change at the college in the future," said Ms. Bain. "We think these are fairly isolated isolated events." Saturday's shooting has management management at FLOW 93.5 FM pondering pondering the future of 'Fuel-Up Fridays,' a scries of live-to-air events broadcast from E.P. Taylor's Taylor's each Friday night from 1 to 3 a.m. "I'm not sure about that yet," said Nicole Jolly, vice-president of operations and marketing at FLOW. "But I'd be surprised if we're back there. I think everyone everyone is still picking up the pieces from Friday." FLOW has never experienced such an incident at one ol its shows, she said. But the radio station is growing concerned about security at its live-to-air events because violence around Toronto seems to be on the increase, increase, she said. Saturday morning's shooting occurred during FLOW'S second visit to Durham College, but the three shots did not go out over the airwaves, Ms. Jolly said. "It's been pretty upsetting for everyone here. We're not used to this," she said. "At the end of the day, what's important to us is safety. We're in the business of having fun but if there's no safety, there's no fun." Charged is Dennis Jackson, 27, of Commonwealth Drive in Toronto; Anthony Thomas Edwards, Edwards, 22, of Hiawatha Road in Toronto; Dwayne Cumberbatch, 23, of Reese Avenue in Ajax; Matthew Okoko, 23, of Em- pringham Drive in Toronto; Mil- ton Jackson, 31, of Commonwealth Commonwealth Drive in Toronto, and a 17-year-old male from Toronto who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Mr. Cumberbatch also faces one charge of breach of conditional conditional sentence. The 17-year-old is also charged with breach of probation. All six were due in court for a bail hearing today at Ontario Court of Justice, 242 King St. E. in Oshawa. With files from Jessica Verge Campus event erupted into 'pure chaos' CAMPUS from page 1 down, 1 noticed a large group standing in one area of the bar [who didn't seem to be mixing 'with the rest of the crowd. . ! .While taking a bathroom [break, I began chatting with a •player from the men's baseball •team about what an incredible Reason he and his teammates had put together. We then heard what sounded like a firecracker. Our eyes instantly instantly locked and 1 remember saying, 'There's no way that was a gunshot.' But then a couple more 1 shots overpowered the music. At that moment our deep est fears were confirmed. Pure chaos ensued and I was one of the few people who managed managed to exit the building through the main entrance. Security staff held the occupants inside for a few minutes until a side door was sprung open, sending people screaming off ,into the night. Moments later, a huge contingent contingent of police cars and ambulances ambulances arrived on the scene to tend to the wounded and secure as many witnesses as possible. I re-entered the pub and was able to stand beside a security guard who had been shot in the leg as paramedics tended to his wound. The young man was extremely brave and even managed to crack a smile while being carried out on a stretcher. Blood-stained towels and bandages were scattered scattered throughout the hallway after the injured security guard was removed. Another person had been.shot in the chest but he must have been taken away immediately immediately because he was nowhere to be seen. The next morning, it was revealed a person person accompanying the gunman was also shot in the melee. I made my way back into the main area of the pub and was shocked to discover the shooting took place a mere five feet from where I had originally been sit ting. Police quickly ushered me away as I was standing just a few feet away from where the bullet shells rested on the floor. 1 joined a gathering of frightened frightened students and staff above the pub in the student centre, it was apparent people were shaken up. Witnesses were allowed to leave after providing a description description of what they saw. People in attendance generally shared a concern for the injured. Much credit has to be given to the many coaches and athletic stall for their efforts in Helping to calm the horrified students. John Herron is a Durham College journalism student.
