www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 21,2004 PAGE 7 Durham College's satisfaction numbers slip But college officials say they're still pleased with performance indicators BY MIKE RUTA Staff writer DURHAM -- Durham College graduates and the employers who hired them are not as happy as they have been in the past, according to an annual provincial survey. The Ontario government since 1998 has used "key performance indicators," indicators," surveys of college graduates graduates and the employers 'who hired them, to allot a small portion of overall overall funding to the 24 colleges. For several years, the release of the KPIs was a cause for celebration at Durham College, but the results released released last week show that in virtually virtually every main category, the percent age of pleased graduates and employers employers is down from last year. "1 guess they're a little lower, but the percentage difference is miniscule," miniscule," says Bev Balenko, the college's college's chief operating officer, noting Durham remains No. 1 in the GTA in terms of student satisfaction and graduate employment. "We're really pleased with that." The college expects roughly $500,000 in funding as a result of the KPIs. The graduate employment rate, based on a survey of former students six months after graduation, was 87.5 per cent, 13th best in the province. Last year's 90.2 per cent rate was good enough to place eighth in Ontario, Ontario, and in 2000, Durham College tied for first with a 94.1 per cent. As for graduate satisfaction, 76.8 per cent reported being very satisfied with Durham College six months after leaving, which placed the school at second last in the province for that category. Meanwhile, 11.3 per cent say.they are very dissatisfied, and only graduates graduates from Seneca and Lambton col- ■ J * .-Vf. r; MM' - -ti ■ ' . «J.®*: Chicken Nuggets These tasly and tender nuggets are breaded and ready to heat up for a dip-ready treat. 33-40 Pieces Dip 'em in M&M Tangy Plum Sauce 250 ml/8.8 ft oz- $1.69 MâXj memberf special] m Customer SAVE s 4 wist' '■ 'A Marinated Boneless Chicken Breasts Four different flavours of deliciously marinated, skinless, boneless chicken breasts. In 2002, 11.7 per cent of DC grads reported they were dissatisfied. The employer satisfaction rate, based on a survey of employers who hired 2002/03 DC grads, was 91.5 per cent, 15lh in Ontario. Last year's figure was 93.4 per cent, the fourth best. Ms. Balenko says that drop is disappointing, disappointing, but adds the numbers can be misleading. The survey could be based on interviews interviews with a small number of employers, employers, she says. Ms. Balenko notes a graduate's permission must be obtained before surveyors can speak to their employers. employers. A student might be concerned that that part of the survey amounts to a performance review, she says, making making them hesitant to give the go ahead. The student satisfaction rate category category represents the average results of a numbers of questions, asking students students how satisfied they are that then- college program will prepare them for their career, the overall quality of the learning experiences in this program program and the overall quality of the college's facilities, resources and services services available to students.
