PAGE 14 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 5,2004 Green Gaels making a habit of winning big www.durhamregion.com Follow up convincing victory in season opener with 16-6 decision in Huntsville BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor HUNTSVILLE - There wasn't an area that the Clarington Green Gaels didn't dominate, and not surprisingly, surprisingly, the final score reflected that. Making the trek north to face the Huntsville Hawks on Saturday night, the Green Gaels dominated dominated early, coasting to an impressive 16- 6 victory, their second second in a row to start the Jr. B lacrosse regular season. The Green Gaels jumped out to an 11- 4 advantage after the first period, and coasted the rest of the way. It didn't seem to matter how many players were on the floor, the Green Gaels were t clearly the better L- : team, scoring five on the power play and another four short- handed. "It was one of those bad habit games," general manager Doug Luey said of the lazy traps teams can fall into with such a' sizeable lead to work with. Doug Luey Shane Sargent "Once we got a big lead, we wanted wanted to concentrate on a few things we needed to work on: keeping the pressure pressure up and keep from letting the game get out of control," from a physical standpoint, he said. The Green Gaels accomplished both objectives. Coming off a six-point outing in the season opener, Shane Sargent was again front and centre in Huntsville, scoring three times and adding four assists to lead the scoring scoring parade. James Barton also had a strong night, scoring four times and adding one helper, while a couple of four- point performances were turned in by Coady Derks (one goal, three assists) assists) and Steve Hutchins (three goals, one assist). Eric Howe scored twice, with singles singles to Jeff Tsuji, Colin Baker and J.H. McDonald. Marc Jackson had four assists. Rookie goaltender Joel Weber garnered his first start, "settling down after the first period" to earn the victory, said Luey. The Green Gaels will be back at it tomorrow night, hosting the Markham Ironheads at 8 p.m. Luey expects the game to be a track meet, making reference to the fact Markham likes to run the floor. "They have a couple of .tough kids, but lost some of their big guns (goal scorers) from last year," he added. Thursday's game kicks off a busy stretch for the Green Gaels, who visit the Mimico Mountaineers Friday Friday and Akwesasne Lightning Sunday. Sunday.
