durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 12,2004 PAGE A9 Key to the future lies in the past KEY from page A7 his father died in 1999, Mr. James recalls discussing an issue with staff, and when he was puffed with the success of reaching a decision, his father strolled into his office and explained in a couple of sentences why the idea wouldn't work. "He was right. My father was a great resource. I often find myself wondering in different situations what my dad would do." Mr. James said he takes his family's business very seriously, and prefers to continue the family atmosphere with staff. There is little employee turnover and everyone digs in to help each other, said Mr. James. As well, to make the most of his employee's time and to stay current and competitive, James Publishing has made a point of investing in current technology. One piece of equipment is a test model that has yet to be released for sale. Heidelberg Canada Graphic Equipment Limited approached James Publishing to help it test the new piece of equipment starting in May 2003. It is the world's first computer-to-plate system for smaller printers. It produces printing plates for the sheet-fed and newspaper Web presses used at James Publishing without the need for film and chemicals used in the printing process. Mr. James said this is exactly the type of equipment needed to compete against larger printing companies. "We're always looking at new equipment," said Mr. James. "As markets emerge, printing changes and you're always looking for the quicker, cheaper advantage." When testing was completed in December 2003, James Publishing agreed to buy the next generation of the device. The new model will feature automation and quality controls, at a price tag of $250,000. The equipment has attracted attention from publishing companies from as far away as Auckland, New Zealand, and Mr. James enjoys the opportunity to demonstrate the new technology. He said the publishing world is competitive, but it's common for companies to help one another learn about advances, or to offer services when equipment isn't available. James Publishing has rooms full of equipment that arc part of the process for printing brochures, community and college newspapers, booklets, flyers, pamphlets, and even Elections Canada and Ontario ballots. "One press has been here longer than I have," said Mr. James. "We still use it for numbering." Mr. James has witnessed an evolution of technology from his years in the business. As a child, he worked summers with wood and lead type. "My timing in the business was perfect," said Mr. James. "In 100 years printing technology didn't change... and now we're using computer to plate. There's only two (machines) capable of this in the world and we have one of them." But James Publishing as it is today couldn't exist without the past, and one of the most important things Mr. James said he has is his family name. Mr. James said one of his daughters worked on a school project for which she had to feature a special person. Mr. James was asked to. represent his family for the project, which would be about his father, John James. He asked his daughter why she chose to do her project on her grandfather. "Everyone kno\ys him, and everyone likes him," she answered. Mr. James said his daughter's observation sums up what his family was able to 1 accomplish in the publishing business. "At the end of the day, honesty and integrity are so important. He (John James) was very much about honesty and integrity." /4tl tAe Seat fa* tAe 'Kent 150 tyon* Your Friends at JAMES INSURANCE BROKER LIMITED • Home • Auto • Business • Farm . • Since 1893 26 King Street E. 905 623.4406 and read stin Barry ro ta (oftons Jotmm Potk1hbM§l 30 King Street West Bowmanville 905-623-3132 9 e The Canadian Statesman MOORE ELECTRIC Bowmanville, ON (905) 623-5901 Extend Our Congratulations to James Pul on their 150th Anniversary The James family, initially John and Dorothy, and now Rick and Kim, for the past 30 years have been dedicated and caring customers of Moore Electric.
