A. JAMES'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY AS EDITOR OF THE STATESMAN The past half-century has been a wonderful period of progress in the arts, sciences and inventions of various kinds. Speaking of these inventions and the changes that mark this period I've just been quietly thinking that a little quiet reflection reveals very vividly the fact that many of our most common utilities, conveniences and amusements of today were absolutely unknown 50 years ago, in a community such as this. Let us take a few minutes together and recall the list of today's commonplace things, which we have come to feel that we cannot do without: 1 - The linotype now used in so many printing offices was not in use then. 2 - The gasoline engine was not dreamed of then. 3 - The motor car - automobiles, trucks and buses - were entirely unknown. 4 - The telephone was just being experimented with by Prof. Bell of Brantford. 5 - Electric light, and the various Edison products, were still in the background. 6 - Street cars were drawn by horses for years afterward. 7 - The gramophone had not been conceived. 8 - The aeroplane was not successfully constructed and operated for thirty years after. 9 The radio, with all its wonderful possibilities, was not conceived as an instrument adaptable to household uses until after the Great War. 10 - The Frigidaire and the Kelvinator, now adaptable for the family ice supply and refrigeration, is a modern invention of" only a few years ago, but coming into very general use. 11 - The domestic oil burner is a product of the last decade, and eliminates the drudgery of the old plans of heating with wood and coal. The list enumerated our outstanding inventions, but hundreds of others of simpler construction have also been invented and introduced into everyday life, which facilitate the work of the home, the farm, the factory and life's activities generally. *** Think, too, of the changes in vehicular traffic. Look at Bowmanville's King Street paved from end to end in connection with the provincial" highway paved from Windsor to Montreal and far beyond, and a horse and buggy is now as rare as was the automobile less than two decades ago. Today, hundreds of United States automobiles pass through these Ontario north shore towns daily with from two to six or more tourists on a seeing-Canada excursion and note the camps and home-from-home accommodation provided in great numbers all along the provincial highway for tourists. Note, too, the rapid multiplication of motor buses for passengers and trucks now running in competition with the railways and the immense quantities of merchandise being transported east and west on these fast-running transports. These are only a few of the changes that have been introduced. Wouldn't our forbears be surprised could they return and see how fast we are living in this first half of the twentieth century?
