PAGE 12THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 21,2004 www.durhamregion.com Opportunity knocks, Redmen fail to answer Lose to Lakers, 15-13 PETERBOROUGH - The Brook- lin Redmen lost control Monday. A victory in Peterborough would have allowed the Redmen a chance to lock up first place in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Major Series simply by beating the bottom two teams in the final two games of the regular season. Instead, a dominant second period by the hometown Lakers led to a 15-13 Redmen defeat and left the first four spots in the standings very much up for grabs with the end of the season looming Sunday. The Redmen and Brampton Excelsiors Excelsiors are now tied atop the standings with identical 11-5 records, with Brampton holding the tiebreaker advantage, advantage, followed closely by Six Nations Nations (10-5-1) and Peterborough (10- 4). The top two teams will receive byes through the first round, leaving the third through, sixth place teams to • play best-of-five quarterfinals. Monday's game at the Peterborough Peterborough Memorial Centre, re-scheduled following last week's flood, was played despite a continued state of emergency in the city. The Redmen took a 5-4 lead out of the first period, but trailed 12-8 through two and never recovered. Kasey Beirnes scored five times in defeat, while Gavin Prout (2g, 8a), Shawn Williams (3g, 5a) and Jason Crosbie (2g, 2a) also figured prominently prominently for Brooklin. Williams now has a safe lead atop the league scoring leaders with 39-73-112 numbers through 16 games. The Redmen are in St. Catharines (5-9) Thursday and close out the season season against Windsor (0-16) Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre. h LIVE ENTERTAINMENT fj r SAT., JULY 24th - 10pm "START «, IT UP" 600 Grandview, Oshawa 905-436-1476 Follow the huge Canadian flag to Automotive Excellente Clarinpt'hn S.H.O.T.
