PAGE 14 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ NOVEMBER 10, 2004 durhemregion.com Generals take two out of three on the road Can't complete sweep against • lowly Saginaw BY BRIAN MCNAIR Staff Editor OSHAWA -- The way things have gone to dale, you would think most of the Oshawa Generals Generals would agree with Meat Loaf's assessment that two out of three ain't bad. If they've heard of Meat Loaf, that is. Even if not, the Generals have to be pleased with taking two wins out of three weekend road games, especially considering they went in with a dreadful 0-7 record away from home. The one sticking point, however, however, is the fact the Generals needed needed only a Sunday win against the OHL's lowest-ranked team, the Saginaw Spirit, to sweep the weekend and move to within a point of eighth place in the Eastern Conference. As it turned out, the Generals lost 4-2, fell to 7-11-0-0 and remain in last place in the conference, tied with the St. Michael's Majors, three ROAD WOES Life wasn't kind to the Generals on the road, losing losing seven in a row prior to a pair of victories on Friday and Saturday over Sarnia and Plymouth by identical 4-2 scores. The score remained the same (4-2) Sunday in Saginaw, Saginaw, but the winning trend ended with a loss. points back of the final playoff spot. And that sticks.in Bob McGill's craw. "After Saturday night, I certainly certainly thought it was a great opportunity to come away with six points," says McGill, the team's first-year coach. "It was one of those nights where we didn't have enough people who came to compete... I'd like to see more urgency. It was a huge game. We can't be satisfied with four points." Goalie Ryan Gibb certainly did his part to make the sweep a possibility. He made 37 saves Friday and 42 Saturday as the Generals won by identical 4-2 scores over the Sarnia Sting and Plymouth Whalers respectively, then stopped all 14 pucks he faced Sunday. Trouble was he didn't get the start Sunday. Instead, Dan Turple continued his recent struggles, allowing four goals on 14 shots through 28 minutes, including power-play markers 1:40 apart that drove him from the game and gave Saginaw a 4-2 lead it held for the duration. The Generals fought back earlier earlier from a 2-0 deficit on goals from Brett Trudell (9th) midway through the first period and Tyler Donati (9th) on the power play early in the second. But Marek Kvapil scored the winner for Saginaw with a five- on-three advantage and Sean Courtney notched his second of the game on the same power play to provide insurance. Patrick Patrick Asselin also scored for the Spirit, now 4-11-1-3 but still in last place in the league. In Plymouth Saturday, the Generals Generals were outshot 44-19, but sealed the win with an empty- net goal by Chris Hulit (9th). Donati, Adam Berti (3rd) and The Coolest Place in Town!
