The more I learn; the more that I am amazed. At a time when most of us have likely spent our limit during the holidays it is amazing how we, as Canadians, have the compassion and resolve to dig deep to help people half a world away. The world-wide response to the cry for help for the families affected affected by the December 26th tsunami has been incredible. The response here, in our community, has been awesome. On Friday January 7th, employees of the Municipality were given the opportunity opportunity to donate their loose change or more in little buckets located located at all municipal facilities. The Municipality, itself, agreed to match the donations of the employees and to forward it on to the Canadian Red Cross. It gives me great pride to confirm that the Municipality gave the Red Cross a cheque in the amount of $ 7,563.00. In light of the Federal Government's promise to match all donations received by January 11, 2005, the Clarington Team is responsible for a total donation of $ 15,126.00 to the Tsunami Relief Effort. I tip my hat to all of those who participated. I also salute the students and staff of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board who have raised almost $ 75,000. The employees of Ontario Power Generation - Darlington collected, over $ 11,000.00 - this will be matched by the Federal Government. The effort to assist the victims of the tsunami does not end here. Various financial institutions and relief organizations continue to ask for and receive donations that will be directed to provide relief - food; water, medicine, etc. - to the people of South East Asia. Closer to home, all Durham Region municipalities are involved with a community-wide effort that focuses oh a special event to be held Saturday January 29,2005 at Deer Creek Golf & Country Club. Part of the event has already begun. An online auction began on January 20 lh and will run until 10:00 PM on January 29'\ All of the items have been donated by businesses and individuals individuals throughout the Region. There is also a silent auction scheduled for the evening of the 29th. To date more than 350 items have been donated for sale, through these auctions - in excess of $ 500,000. You can participate in this effort by attending the day-time event (11:00 AM - 4:00 PM) which presents a variety of entertainment, food and beverages for the whole family. Admission is FREE. The evening event - sorry no children - starts at 7:00 PM and includes entertainment, refreshments and the silent auction. Admission to this is $ 50 per person and includes a ticket to win a major door prize. Additional information is available at www.durhamreaion.com. Newspaper Deliveries From time to time the Municipal Law Enforcement Division receives complaints from citizens concerning concerning the number of newspapers, leaflets and advertising flyers which accumulate on the driveways driveways and ditches of some properties. If you receive these papers and wish to continue to do so, please pick them up promptly so that they don't become an eyesore in our neighbourhoods. If you do not wish to receive them, simply contact the circulation department for the paper and ask that they not deliver to your address. This will reduce the litter and help us all to keep our communities clean and attractive. $rmg your sweetheart...
