durhamregion.com ^Adelaide Avenue may lead to Clarington I^BY JENNIFER STONE |i COURTICE -- The extension of Ade- »?y*laide Avenue into Courtice will be the ij»£subject of a public meeting Thursday eve- >ining. - ,. >v The potential lengthening of the street, which currently ends at Townline Road in -~- < Oshawa, has been on the Region's radar ,'for about 14 years, said Clarington Mayor 'John Mutton, noting that residents in the area have been "living in limbo," waiting "to find out if the road will be extended. "I think Adelaide's got to go through. We've got Bloor Street and Hwy. 2, and the volume is tremendous there. I think the Adelaide route is a necessary extension," he said. The Region began an environmental assessment study on the potential expansion expansion last June, and though the original plan was to bring Adelaide to Courtice Road, environmental considerations, such as the Black-Farewell provincially significant wetland, shortened the preferred length of the road, Gene Chartier of Durham's works department told Clarington's General General Purpose and Administration committee committee Monday. Now the Region is looking at bringing Adelaide only as far as Trulls Road. Construction of the expansion is expected expected to begin between 2008 and 2011. But because of potential development in that area, the environmental assessment began early, said Mr. Chartier. "We needed to ensure the alignment was defined before further applications were processed for that area," he said. The study has considered a number of different potential routes. Consultants have arrived at one preferred route, which seems to have the least number of impacts, said Martin Scott, of McCormick Rankin Corporation, the consulting firm doing the study. The preferred route will mean the Region will have to acquire five existing homes. Those homeowners have been notified, said Mr. Scott. The public meeting on the potential expansion will take place Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Courtice Community Complex, 2950 Courtice Rd., from 5 to 8 p.m. Public comment received at that session will be considered for incorporation into the draft environmental assessment report.
