PAGE 6 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ MARCH 2,2005 School board weighs change to holiday schedule durhamregion.com Clarington trustee says students need time to write exams BY PEGGY FOSTER Staff writer PETERBOROUGH -- School holidays in December and January will look different for students in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board area if a new plan receives Ministry Ministry of Education approval. A proposed calendar shows students would attend school until Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, then have holidays until Jan. 6, 2006, returning to school on Monday, Jan. 9, 2006. Sherry Summer- sides, associate director director of education, told the school board last week that a modified calendar had been chosen for 2005- 2006 over the other option ■ of a Ministry-set calendar, after both options were shown to school councils, teaching and school staff, education centre managers and CUPE. Responses Responses from the groups indicated an overwhelming majority in favour of the modified calendar, Ms. Summersides said; Trustée Nancy Coffin was adamant that it was more important for high school students to have more exam-writing days than 'to decrease the number of available exam days from five to four, making it necessary for some students to write two exams on one day. "What about students who are struggling with the heavy load," Ms. Coffin asked? "It isn't fair to them to expect they should write two exams Nancy Coffin on the same day." One version of the secondary school calendar shows four exam days in semester one, and five exam days in semester two. Another version of the secondary school calendar calendar provided by Ms. Summersides shows an even split of the exam days at five for each semester. This second version is recommended for high schools in Bowmanville, Port Hope, Cobourg and Campbellford and Centres for Individual Study located at those schools. Ms. Summersides said school boards in the area had been contacted, including the Durham Catholic District School Board, Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Clarington Catholic District School Board and all are planning to use the modified calendar in 2005- 2006. An different school calendar is used for Brook- side Secondary School in Cobourg, she said, where students receive more individualized programs. programs. In the 2006-2007 school year the KPR board is looking at a December break from Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006 to Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, with March break set for Saturday, March 10, 2007, to Sunday March 18, 2007. Looking forward another year, the break will . be from Saturday, Dec. 22,2007, to Sunday, Jan. 8, 2008. March break that year will stretch from Saturday March 8, 2008, to Sunday, March 16, 2008. - Ms. Summersides said agreement on the 2006 and 2008 dates have not been confirmed by the PVNC board since it has not yet completed talks on the advanced dates. In the past, students regularly were dismissed from classes a week prior to the Christmas holiday, were out of school between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 and returned to classes as early as possible in January. Overcrowding has been 28-year problem: trustee From page 1 admitted during the meeting that Waverley Public School is the last on the list of the KPR's capital renewal plan for schools, adding she is looking forward to having the school on the accommodation accommodation list this year. - "If this school was overcrowded when it was built, the problem started 28 years ago," Trustee Roy Wilfong said. "I'm really shocked to see some of this. More should be done than just to receive this for information. information. "We must make a point of taking it to the accommodation committee. • "For 28 years it's fallen through the cracks. Let's see something done," Mr. Wilfong said, to the applause of the school's representatives.
