The Wilmot Creek Health Committee wrote to council, asking for a $1,500 grant to help pay the more than $8,000 it costs to purchase and install the equipment, train people to use it and support and monitor it in the first year. The group is currently fundraising to purchase the equipment. A defibrillator shocks the heart and restores a normal normal heartbeat after cardiac arrest. In recent years, there has been a push to have the equipment on hand in public and private buildings, since speedy administration administration of the shock is shown to greatly increase cardiac arrest survival rates. But, because Wilmot Creek, an older adults' community community on the shores of Lake Ontario between Newcastle and Bowmanville, isn't open to the public, some councillors didn't support helping pay for the equipment to be placed in their recreation centre. "1 am unable to support this on the basis that we haven't purchased (defibrillators) for our own use yet," said Ward 1 local councillor Adrian Foster. "It doesn't seem quite right to give a grant to place something on private property when we haven't dealt with our own buildings." The problem isn't with the equipment, said Ward 1 and 2 Regional Councillor Jim Schell. Wilmot Creek is "a private enterprise," said Conn. Schell. "As much as I think defibrillators should be everywhere everywhere for everybody, I can't support this for a private enterprise." The Municipality is looking at placing the equipment in public buildings, but at the moment, cost is prohibitive, said Franklin Wu, the Municipality's Municipality's Chief Administrative Officer. "We will have to do it incrementally," incrementally," said Mr. Wu. "It's only a matter of time, and we will do it." The request did qualify for funding under the Municipality's grants program. The grant passed after Mayor John Mutton cast his vote to break council's tie, saying Wilmot Creek residents help increase Clarington Transit's ridership, and pay development charges when they buy their homes, even though "by and large, they don't see a lot of the infrastructure" those levies pay for in the municipality. "It's $1,500 for a good cause," said Jim Schell Mayor Mutton. Gunman robs Courtice bank COURTICE -- Police are seeking a single suspect in the armed robbery of a Courtice bank Thursday afternoon. Just before 5 p.m., a man walked into the Royal Bank branch at 1405 Hwy. 2 and pointed a gun at a teller, Durham Regional Police said. The man fled on foot with cash. The teller was not injured. Police are looking for a white man, 40 to 45 years of age and about 5-foot-6 with brown and grey hair and two to three days of facial hair. He wore a white ball cap with "CANADA" emblazoned on it and a green canvas coat. The gun was a revolver, police said.
