Season ends in Game 7 for Warriors BY SHAWN CAYLEY Staff Writer _ ' ' . ' PETERBOROUGH - Just like last season, the Whitby Warriors and Peterbor- . ough Lakers went to Game 7 in their first round OLA Jr. A playoff series. But unlike last year, the Warriors came out on the losing losing end of the do-or-die contest. And in a big way too. The Lakers took an early 7-1 lead and seemingly cruised through the remainder • of the game en route to a dominating 17-6 series clinching;™,, ','We came out flat," said Warriors coach,. : Jeff McComb when asked what went wrong in Game 7. "Sometimes Game 7s go that way. We thought it would have been closer based on the rest of the series, but it didn't work out that way." The turning point in the series came Thursday in Whitby. Fjaving already blown an opportunity to end the series in Game 5, the Warriors looked determined to wrap it up in Game 6, but came out on the short end of a 13-11 overtime decision. . '-'We needed that home floor win," McComb said. "We should have won that game, we outshot them 76-53. A lot of crédit needs to go to their goaltending, but on home floor with the series on the line, we should have won." The much anticipated match-up of Zack ■ Greer versus Shawn Evans failed to provide provide the same excitement of a year ago. It was a tale of two series.for both stars, as Greer's return to the line-up in Game 2 seemed to give the Warriors the boost they needed after a lackluster performance to open the series, while Shawn Evans looked like just another player in the first four games of the series as he only notched three points. ■ However, the roles seemed to reverse as the series drew closer to the end. Greer still managed to pick up his points, but he clearly wasn't the Zack Greer that Warrior fans have come to expect, while Evans showed his worth to the Lakers as he broke orlt of his slump in a big way, scoring 25 points over the final three, games including five goals in Game 7. 1 'They had a good battle last year," said McComb of Greer and Evans. "I thought Zack stmggled at times in this series, but he gave a great effort considering he hadn't played much box laciosse in the last year, while Evans really stepped up for them. Hè is a great player." With their dream of a championship now an afterthought, the Warriors will examine their roster to see what changes are needed ' to make it a reality for 2006. ■ The core of the team is slated to return to the fold, including Greer, Kyle O'Brien and Marc Jackson, while -they will look internally, as well as to the Jr. B ranks, to fill the void left by the departures of captain Nate Andres, leading scorer Tyler Perry, goaltender Rick Passfield, defencemen Daryl Jackson and forward Jimmy Mumford.
