THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ AUGUST 10,2005 ♦ PAGE 13 durtiamregion.com Game show enthusiast chosen to 'come on down' Very Competitive Pri on I Ion h • 11v>11t .111 « ' Æ BY JILLIAN FOLLERT Staff writer WHITBY -- "Dustin Brown, come on down!" This phrase sent a Whitby resident and his family leaping out of their seats last week, when he was chosen as one of three audience members to compete on the popular American game show The Price is Right. "I saw my name on the sign and I just started going crazy," said the 23-year- old, who travelled to CBS Studios in California with his mom Cathy and older brother Wes. ' "I was shaking my mom and jumping up and down with my Canada flag. I almost fell on the girl sitting in front of me." While Mr. Brown was stunned that his name was chosen from among 350 audience audience members, he said just getting into the studio was a feat in itself. He and his brother had originally ordered tickets for the show as a 50th birthday present for their mom, a longtime longtime game show enthusiast, but had to cancel after a work conflict came up. After sending away for new tickets, they were crushed when a letter arrived informing them that the audience capacity capacity had been reached. Undeterred they flew to Los Angeles and arrived at the television studio just after 4 a.m. last Wednesday, for a 2:30 p.m. taping. "There were people with air mattresses sleeping in line on the street," Mr. Brown said. ■ "Even at 4 a.m. there were already a hundred people waiting, it was unbelievable." unbelievable." ;V After 10 hours of waiting, filling out forms and chatting with producers, the trio finally received coveted name tags and. were ushered into the studio, where they were instructed when to clap and cheer.' ' Mr. Brown said the screaming was so deafening that at first, he didn't realize his name had been called. "I ran down to' the stage and I couldn't believe I was standing there with Bob Barker," he said, noting that the famed host looks older in person. After guessing the closest pricè on a set of encyclopedias and some groceries, he was given the chance to play "Let 'em Roll" where the player sends five cubes tumbling down a ramp. Each cube had a picture of a car on three sides, and sums of money on the other three,-with the object being to get five cars facing up. "When I saw that the prize was a new car I got nervous, my mom was in the audience crying," Mr. Brown says, "recalling how close he came on his first two rolls. "When I went for the third roll one of the dice got stuck on its side but it flipped over at the last second and landed on a car. I was so excited I didn't even ask what kind of car it was." His prize; a purple 2005 Dodge Neon valued at about $16,000 (US) will be shipped to him later this month. In addition to some intense Price is Right watching in the weeks leading up to the trip, and a few hours spent perusing perusing grocery prices at stores in California, Mr. Brown said his game show luck can be chalked up to family tradition. His mom has competed on Just Like Mom, Jackpot, Guess What, Supermarket Supermarket Sweep and Split Second, with his father and brother joining her on a few occasions. Inspired by his success, Mr. Brown said he might like to give Jeopardy a try one day, but not without brushing up on his trivia first.
