Bloom Field Farm and Market Things are growing at Bloom Field Farm New garden centre, fruit and vegetable retailer in Newcastle BY JENNIFER STONE Staff writer 'NEWCASTLE - Nancy Mallette riéver thought the business she and her husband Joe started in 2004 would grow so blooming quickly. The Mallettes are the proprietors of Bloom ' Field Farm, a new perennial nursery and produce retail outlet on the eastern outskirts of Newcastle Village. The farm itself is set on 90 acres, with a small wetland and pond area at the entrance. Fields of perennials, grown onsite from bare root stock without heat or chemicals, can be seen from the laneway laneway to the greenhouses, where plants are divided according to where they will do best in the sun, part-sun, or shade, ^ehind the greenhouses is the produce ; Hop, where visitors can choose from : .variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and c ut flowers, grown either onsite or on nearby farms. Also available is a variety (if giftware and other gardening goods. • At the moment, the farm offers about U00 varieties of perennials, said Ms. Mallette. , ! l "Because we offer so many, and we seek out root stock from around the , world, (gardeners) can always find the newest and hottest varieties here," she noted. iThe plants are for sale; but advice comes free, said Ms. Mallette, who goes s'p far as to offer a service called "Let is Bring The - Garden" to-You." Ms-. . V Mallette helps gardeners pick out suit- M>le perennials, then delivers and helps Vrange them. Gardeners wishing to %in the free service must meet a pur- cnày requirement. Ms Alallette, who is originally from Newcàti e? a nd her husband purchased the farmp 2003, a decision they made after havib: run a trucking business in Hampton fo.20-plus years. • j What was supposed to be a five- year plan has Tirned into a two-year Plan" said Mç. Mj'iette, noting the first yjiar was spent bulltbzing, building and planting. In 2004, theberennial nursery opened. Along with tie nursery and produce shop, which opmed this sea-. sbn, the farm also sells Christmas trees and fresh garland during the holiday season. Two recent projects have Ms. Mallette both hopping and excited. First, the business is constructing the Clarington Country exhibit, an agricultural exhibit to be displayed at this year's Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. "It's really exciting. It-was nice to be asked," she said. Secondly, the centre has been chosen as the final stop on next year's Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre Artist in the Garden tour, which will take place on June 17, 2006. Tickets will be available available at both Bloom Field Farm and other locations in the fall. Ms.' Mallette said she's surprised- at how quickly the business has grown. "We never expected it to grow as fast as it did," she said, noting they have not ' only a strong local clientele, but, "the distance people are driving (to visit the farm) is amazing."
