PAGE 8 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ NOVEMBER 30,2005 durhamrcgion.com Farmers set to light up the night BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer CLARINGTON -- Country roads in Clarington will be unusually bright Wednesday, Dec. 7, lit by the thousands of lights decorating tractors and wagons in the 7th annual Fanners' Christmas Parade of Lights. The parade, run by farmers from Tyrone, Hampton, Enniskillen, and Enfield, started small, with only about 500 people coming out to witness the first such event. But by last year, the parade had grown in popularity, with an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people lining the rather extensive parade route, said Tim Sargent, an Enniskillen farmer. The parade begins at 6 p.m. at Old Scugog Road and the 9th Concession, running south to Potter's Lane, then jogging jogging back slightly north, to the 8th Concession. Concession. It then goes past Haydon, and down Middle Road, turning east on the 7th Concession, winding up in Tyrone around 7:30 p.m. The parade began seven years ago, taking taking the idea from a similar event in the Rockwood area of Ontario. "It's a way of farmers showing their appreciation for the city folk putting up with our slow-moving vehicles (on the road) all summer long," he said. This year, like last, there will be 15 floats. The group is limited to farmers for insurance purposes, and participants are involved by invitation only. Organizers are asking those who come to see the parade not to park on southbound southbound or eastbound shoulders of the road, and to ensure they stay well back from the road, when outside their vehicles. vehicles. Wearing, appropriate clothing may also make it easier for farmers driving the tractors pulling floats to see people along the route, said Mr. Sargent. Finding just the right place for viewing the parade is important, he noted, though it's impressive from almost any vantage point. "It's nice if you can get someplace dark," he said. 'That's where it really hits you." Mr. Sargent estimates there are literally thousands of lights, given his own family float has more than 300, and there are other floats with more. For the last two years,- he's left much of the design of his family float to his five children, who range in age from five to 16. It's become a well-known community event, held each year the first Wednesday Wednesday in December. , "There are actually people in the comj munities who will have house parties around this event," he said. The event is just a way to spread cheer in Clarington, he said. •' "Hopefully, we bring a little holiday spirit to those who see it," said Mr. Sar- . gent. 1 -i OF ONE!
