durhamreglon.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ DECEMBER 7,2005 ♦ PAGE B9 Newest Generals proving their worth Regan, MacLean, Paige looking good with new club ; BY SHAWM CAYLEY • Staff Writer OSHAWA -- No one would be .. surprised to see Brad Selwood walking around with a smile on • his face this week. After all, the oft-criticized general general manager is looking like a pretty pretty smart man after a couple trades he made last week paid immediate dividends for the Oshawa Generals. Generals. Defenceman Eric Regan seems to be establishing himself quite nicely on the blue-line, while forward forward Brett MacLean looks better and better each time out as he works himself back into game shape. And little-known Kyle Paige showed some crafty scoring touch last weekend with a beautiful goal in Sunday's game, a 4-3 overtime overtime win over the visiting Sudbury Wolves. After playing a limited role with the Otters, Regan has been thrust into the spotlight, playing heavy minutes on the powerplay and penalty kill and even popping in a few points, including his first goal of the season, also on Sunday. "We are obviously really happy with the way that it has worked out for us," said head coach Randy Ladouceur of the play from the newcomers. "They are three good players that can contribute right now, and with their youth they are going to be with us into the future too." All three were picked up last week, Regan and MacLean, along with a pair of second round picks, were acquired from Erie for Adam Berti and Bret Nasby, while Paige came over from the Guelph Storm for an eighth round draft pick and the trio all played big roles in the . win over Sudbury. Regan scored a powerplay goal and added an assist to give him four points in his first three games with the Generals, while Paige also added a goal and MacLean scored his first point since being acquired with an assist on Regan's marker. After sleepwalking through the first 20 minutes, and trailing 2- 0, the Generals, kick started by Regan's goal, got back into the contest and took a 3-2 lead early in the third on a beautiful goal by Paige who was sent in alone from the blueline on a feed from Peter Tsimikalis. Hulking Wolves defender Marc Staal then tied the game on a breakaway by beating Carlo DiRienzo, who was making his second start in three games, on the glove side. The Generals then killed off a penalty late in regulation to set up the overtime heroics, which likely brought another smile to Selwood's face. Tsimikalis set up rookie winger Dale Mitchell 24 seconds into the extra frame and the latter fired a wrist shot past goaltender Kevin Beech, propelling propelling the Generals to victory and improving their record to 6-20-2- 0. Cal Clutterbuck scored the other Generals goal, his 15th of the year. The only downer stemming from Sunday's game came at the expense of John Tavares. Ladouceur Ladouceur appeared to be sending a message to the young phenom as Tavares found himself strapped to the bench for the entire third period. "I think it was a long weekend for John. He was doing a couple of things out there that weren't really in John's character, so he took a little bit of a rest," said Ladouceur in explaining the Tavares benching. benching. "He got caught out on a long shift there on the powerplay and ended up taking a penalty probably probably because of that. It's just one of those things he is going to have to learn like all young players." GENERALLY SPEAKING: Trainer Bryan Boyes will head to Vancouver with the Team Canada World Juniors as the Equipment Manager. It will be the fourth time Boyes has been a part of the World Junior Championships, previously winning gold in 1996, silver in 1999 and another gold in 2005...Trevor Waddell (groin) missed his third straight game on Sunday and won't be in the line-up tonight when the Generals Generals head to Belleville to take on the Bulls, but is expected back in the line-up when they head to Erie on Saturday... Defencemen Brad Pawlowski (shoulder) and David Halasz (knee) both missed the Sudbury game...With all the injuries on the back end, winger Nathaniel Brooks saw some time on the point in Sunday's game. "That's probably the i biggest strength of this team now 1 is we've got depth. ! "It's a bit of a problem from the ; coaching side trying to get every- : body ice time and get everybody ' in, but that's a good problem that f, we've probably never had here." I With his major junior career likely over, Speight is looking to the future and pondering it as a firefighter. Before that, he is content to be with the Eagles, motivated to help them regain the East Conference title they won in 2003-2004. "I just play for the love of the game. I still want to work hard and put in a good campaign this year," he said.
