/ PAGE A2 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ DECEMBER 7,2005 Oarizigton Leading the Way 905-623-3379 MAYOR'S CORNER ENERGY NEWS IS MORE THAN JUST NUCLEAR Exciting days are ahead as Clarington takes a lead role in meeting the energy challenge. Over this last week, reports of a new nuclear build at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station Station have leaked out from Queen's Park. We ' anxiously wait for the report of the Ontario Power Authority, which will be released Friday, December 9,2005. If these rumours are correct, it will mean thousands of dollars in investment and new jobs in Clarington. Clarington. With the phase out of coal, nuclear power is an important part of the cleaner energy solution for Ontario. Our experience in Clarington over the past 25 years has been very positive and we would welcome a new advanced nuclear generating station. But nuclear is only part of the story and power generation is only part of the answer. Durham is the host of an emerging cluster of energy industries that not only includes nuclear generation but other forms of power generation and advanced distribution companies. Durham also hosts businesses working on green energy and conservation solutions including wind turbines and smart metering. For this reason, Clarington took the initiative to partner with the UOIT and Durham Region to establish a physical base for new energy-related energy-related businesses. The concept of a physical home for the energy cluster in the Clarington Energy Business Park has. garnered a wide range of interest from businesses large and small. Over the coming years, we will be working hard to implement this concept with our various partners. We hope to host a variety of sustainable, environmentally- frièndly energy industries. This park could host an incubation complex where university research projects could lead to commercial spin-off companies. The Energy Business Park would demonstrate sustainable development practices, use the best practices in "green" buildings and demonstrate sustainable infrastructure using wind, solar, biomass and co-generation opportunities to create a tremendous synergy. Last week the Minister of Energy, the Honourable Donna Cansfield, addressed the inaugural meeting of the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance. Alliance. I was pleased that the Minster mentioned our Energy Business Park several times in her address. The Municipality is also encouraging more sustainable forms of development. development. I was pleased to see Halminen Homes, a local developer, take the initiative to introduce the Energy Star homes in its most recent development. Energy Star homes are 30 to 40 % more energy efficient than those built to minimum Ontario Building Code standards. Clarington Council is also leading on conservation by example. We installed the hydrogen fuel injection system on our buses to improve energy performance. We recently approved the purchase of a hybrid pick-up truck for our 2006 fleet replacement. For the new Newcastle Aquatic facility we are looking at constructing a "green" energy efficient building. And we will work on many more ways to.provide leadership and encourage a conservation culture. 1 If we are successful with the new nuclear build, it will be a tremendous M economic boost for the area. However, we want Clarington to be much; more than a "nuclear" host community; we want Clarington to be a 111 centre of excellence for energy embracing new "green" energy technologies, technologies, conservation and research. -- :'r4 info@clarington.net The Clarington Board of Trade is geared up to promote local shopping in Clarington this Holiday Season! ORONO TOWN HALL Caring for Cut Christmas Trees The following tips are offered by the Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario iiV ::l Remember, a Christmas tree is a living thing. Look after it care- _ fully as you would a cut flower. Once you select a Christmas ' tree, follow these suggestions to keep it fresh and safe: " 1 If you buy a tree several days before you plan to set it up, store u the tree outdoors or on a cool porch or patio until you are ready ■ to decorate it. An area that provides protection from the wind ; and sun will help the tree retain its moisture. If you plan to store the tree for several days, make a straight cut across the butt end of the tree about one inch from the end. This opens the tree stem so it can take up water. Store the tree upright and place the butt end in a container of water. When you bring the tree into the house for decorating, make another another fresh cut across the trunk about an inch from the original cut. Use a tree stand that holds plenty of water. Trees are thirsty. They may drink up to four litres of water per day, so be sure to check daily and supply fresh water as needed. A stand which holds at least four litres of water is recommended. If you allow the water level to drop below the bottom of the tree, a seal will form just as it does on a cut flower and anew cut will be necessary. Place your tree away from fireplaces, radiators, television sets and other sources of heat.Turn off the tree lights when you leave and before you retire at night. Avoid the use of combustible decorations. Check all electric lights and connections. Lights with worn or frayed cords should ; - be discarded and replaced with new.lights.
