durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ DECEMBER 14,2005 ♦ PAGE A3 and sewer projects deferred Regional staff go over items proposed to be 'pushed back BY CRYSTAL CRIMI Staff Writer DURHAM -- With money tight and expenses on the rise, regional staff are proposing a number of projects for the chopping block. Taunton Road from Simcoe Street to Ritson Road and Mill Street from Hwy. 2 to Hwy. 401, are just a couple of roads projects regional staff suggested pushing back during a Dec. 7, works committee presentation on proposed roads, sewer and water projects for 2006. "Based on the cost trends and targets, we had to make some hard decisions," said Susan Siopis, director of transportation transportation and field services. According to her presentation, the current current draft roads program is proposed at $37.2 million and represents no increase to the tax portion of the program. program. Deferrals sug- ' gested were chosen chosen because of financial targets, specific project difficulties such as protracted land acquisition and utility relocation ' issues, or because the associated sewer and water work has been deferred. Those which could be pushed back include the Taunton and Mill projects, the Ritson/Dean intersection and Brock Road from Pickering Parkway to Hwy 401. A reduced scope is suggested : for Roger Anderson Taunton Road, with work proposed running running from east of Harmony Road to west of Townline, Harmony Road from Hwy. 2 to Rossland Road and road rehabilitation rehabilitation to $5.5 million from $10 million planned in 2006. "Watching this, I just got a chill up my back," said Oshawa Councillor Nester Pidwerbecki. He said the Region has been discussing work on Harmony Road from Florell Drive to Rossland since 1995 and now it's discussing deferring it again until 2007. Cliff Curtis, commissioner of works, said Bell can't relocate its lines quickly enough to accommodate the work. "They'd move that cable pretty quick if we cut it," said Regional Chairman Roger Anderson. Ms. Siopis said with a one per cent increase to the tax portion of its budget, they could bring back the Ritson/Dean intersection, Brock Road from Pickering Parkway to Hwy 401, and increase road rehabilitation to $8 million. Projects currently planned to move ahead include all portions of Taunton Road between Brock Street and Brock Road for $13 million, Taunton east of Harmony to west of Townline for $3.4 million, Harmony from Rossland to Hwy 2 for $6.8 million, Hwy. 47 from Well- wood Drive to Campbell Drive for $2.2 million, road rehabilitation for $5.5 million, million, two bridge replacements for $1.4 million and traffic control programs for $2 million. Some water and sewage projects could also be deferred from the 2006 schedule, according to the Sanitary Sewerage and Water Supply proposed 2006 budget. Those suggested include the Brock Road feedermain from 2006 to 2007 to coincide with a proposed widening of Brock Road; a travelling screen at the Oshawa water supply plant; standby power at the Sunderland water supply plant; an automatic bulk water dispensing dispensing system, capacity optimization at the Corbett Creek Water Pollution Control Plant; and the septage receiving station at Lake Simcoe water pollution control plant.
