v PAGE A10 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ JANUARY 18,2006 Lakeridge Health gets cut of cancer care funding Over $4 million to expand treatment BY JILLIAN FOLLERT Staff Writer OSHAWA -- A major funding announcement from the Province last week includes over $4 million to expand treatment at Durham's new cancer centre. centre. On Friday, Health Minister George Smitherman unveiled the $19.8 million million investment, which will be divided between new and expanded integrated cancer centres in Durham, Mississauga, Kitchener-Waterloo, Sudbury and Thunder Thunder Bay. "We are making these investments because we are committed to waging a war against cancer," the minister said in a statement. "We want to ensure that people in need of life-saving cancer treatment treatment get it as close to come as possible and as quickly as possible." At the McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre in Oshawa, the $4,492,200 cheque will support 3,480 additional chemotherapy visits, 13,887 additional assessment and follow-up visits, and 13,374 additional radiation treatments - - to be provided in Toronto and Kingston until the local facility is up and running. Peter Dixon, Regional Vice President of Cancer Services of Lakeridge Health was pleased to hear the news. "This is a big chunk of money," he said, 'We are making these investments because we are committed to waging a war against cancer.' -- George Smitherman adding that the funds are doled out based on the volume of patients treated at each facility. "Anything that will help us treat additional patients is good news." Durham's cancer centre is an example of an Integrated Cancer Program (ICP), which provides comprehensive cancer services to a defined regional population. This model brings radiation therapy, surgical surgical oncology, preventative oncology, palliative medicine and support services under one structure that is accountable to the hospital CEO. Construction is currently, underway on the 90,000 square foot McLaughlin Durham Durham Regional Cancer Centre, and will be completed in 2006. fAttèntiônmuiHvundândwnersîï GRAND OPENING SPECIAL! „ "V LUBE, OIL & FILTER *9.95 Expires March 31. 2006.
