The first ever dedication of the Lions' Memorial Forest is set for Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14, at 2 p.m. It takes place at the site at the south end of Cob- bledick Road south of the Hwy. 401 overpass, at the entrance to the Samual Wilmot Memorial Nature Trail. The formerly open field is now home to 65 young trees, sbme planted last fall and others this spring, by the local Lions. ' "We had a great crew that helped to dig the holes and plant the trees," said Lion Murray Paterson,, Paterson,, noting people gave both time and equipment to ensure the first batch of trees were planted. The trees, a variety of native species sold for $200, can be purchased in memory of or donated by a local citizen. They were purchased from a local nursery and will be cared for in perpetuity by the Lions. Each tree will be fitted with a dedication plaque, indicating who it commemorates, and by whom the tree. was purchased. The trees form a circle now, with an arbour, made, by Lion - Anna Klaren, . over a walk- . ing path. The site is now four acres, but can be expanded, said Regional Councillor Charlie Trim, also a Newcastle Lion. "There are two more acres to the east and all kinds of land we'll be able to utilize to the south," he said. It's located at the end of Cobbledick Road in Newcastle, and only consists of trees which were planted in memory of individuals from the community who have passed on. Annual dedication services will be held. "For people who want to get in on this, the trees will be continually continually for sale," said Mr. Paterson, noting there will be plantings each fall and spring;. ■ ' "People really think it's a wonderful wonderful idea and they're behind it 100 per cent," he said. "There certainly was no trouble selling the.trees." Anyone planning to attend thé Mother's Day event is advised to bring lawn chairs, said Lion Jean Graham. The cëremony, which will include the reading of the names of people béing commemorated and a bagpiper, will go ahead rain or shine. at Visual Arts Centre of Clarington CLARINGTON -Thewalls of the Visual Arts Centre in Clarington will soon showcase the talent of Nancy Jacobi through the Japanese Paper Place exhibition. Jacobi has brought to , Canada the riches of an art that has reshaped the hearts . and minds of many artists and allows • viewers to enter the ancient art of Japanese 'Washi' Paper. Accompanying Jacobi in the,exhibition, which features an opening reception June 4 from 2-4 p.m., will be 28 renowned artists from Ontario, including Jane Eccles and Ruth Read from our own region.
