Squander early lead in loss to Mimico BY BRAD KELLY ■ Sports Editor BOWMÀNVILLE -- The Clarington ' Green Gaels learned a valuable lesson Friday night, one which should come in handy over the next four games. Up 7-2 in Mimico against the Mountaineers, Mountaineers, the Green Gaels lost their edge, lost the momentum they had built early on, and ultimately lost the game 14-12. It dropped the Green Gaels to 5-2 on the season, good enough for second place in the Mid East behind Barrie. "We are probably one game behind where I think we should be," says GM Neil Atkinson with seven games down and 13 still remaining in the regular season. "Mimico was one of those should have,. could have gardes that we should have won. It just goes to show that you can't take anyone for granted on any given' night." Those should be words of warning as the - Green Gaels head into what appears to be a soft spot in the Jr. B schedule. The next four games are all against teams with less than stellar records. The stretch begins at home on Thursday against 1-10 Milton, followed by games against Huntsville (3- 6), Gloucester (2-8) and Toronto (4-4). On the upside through seven games, Atkinson says that the lacrosse club has the right mental attitude, and that, "We haven't peaked yet, so all we can do is get better." On the flipside, he would like to see the club tidy up in a couple of areas, mainly foolish penalties and turnovers. The next four games will allow the Green Gaels to address those issues before their next big lest, June 1 at home to the division leading Barrie Tornado, who have jumped out to a perfect 8-0 start, including an 8-5 win over the Green Gaels May 6. Redmen WHITBY - The Brooklin Redmen have added another familiar face to v their 2006 Major Series Lacrosse roster. roster. Former Whitby Warriors star AJ. Shannon will make a return to the Brooklin Redmen this summer. He last played here in 2002 when he suited up , for nine games, scored four times and ! . added 17 assists for 21 points. Shan- 1 non has played the last few summers . for the Rochester Rattlers of the Major Lacrosse League, a professional field lacrosse league exclusive to the United States. Shannon also toiled for the- Buffalo Bandits this season and, in nine games, scored seven times and added 16 assists for 23 points before getting injured. He - ; was also able to secure 44 loose-balls as • a member of the Bandits. The signing of A.J. Shannon gives us • added offensive strength and balance," ... says redmen GM Barry Johnson. "His cannon-like shot is obviously intimidat- \ ing to opposition goalies. Expect him to • see plenty of power play time." Added coach Ian McGough: "We're : obviously excited to add a player like i A.J. He is one more piece to the duz- zle." -i Shannon will join his teammates ■ Shawn Williams, Steve Toll, Steve Hoar - and Gavin Prout as they represent Team Canada in the World Field Championships Championships this summer in London, Ontario. The Redmen bring a 0-1 record into tonight's home game against the St. Regis Indians (formerly the Akwesasne Thunder). Game time at Iroquois Park is 8:30 p.m. "We knew they would be a solid ball club, but.we are certainly looking forward to facing them at our home rink," noted Atkinson. Thursday's game against Milton will start at 8 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. 5 I q gu ro v> ® Q.W "05 | g I ^ CO O ^ < I • " F "D c 1 " ID o *" ° Ct-ID^O §S°:gd I J2 </> TZ ^ Ô 3 ^ c0 - ojCvj q ra n: , c CD ■*- -O I Sto w q> o 1 So> w . g c\f ce S ^ œ w co ■a q: E~° & "a c= c\j sz ra i « £ -a H -- E C 3-C aT 2.
