J durhamregion.com Gymnasts steal the show Clarington brings home more than 55 medals from Sun Shine meet ORILLIA -- Athletes from Glaring- J ton Gymnastics Academy in Bowman- viHe recently travelled to Mariposa to compete in the Annual Sun Shine Invitational. Over 25 of Clarington's athletes took centre stage in their last meet of the season, with more than half of the Provincial Team moving up a level to try out some new skills learned over the year. More than 55 medals were brought home by the club including a number of special awards. Some of the youngest athletes representing representing the club in the Ontario Development Development Program (ODP) preformed their best earning them gold medals all around. Out of the youngest stars, Bowman- ville's Cailey Shewchuk received gold AA, placing first out of 40 athletes. Teammates, also from Bowmanville, Raine Sullaphen, Makaela Carmicheal, Natasha Derlis, Carolyn Cornall, Rachel McQuigge and Trisha Shewchuk Shewchuk all received gold all around. The team is ranked C/D, but faced B/C ranked teams. In round robin play the team lost to Newmarket 11-1, tied Innisfil 6-6, then lost to Barrie 10-3. That was enough to put the team into the semifinals, losing to Newmarket 10-0. Even facing stiff competition like the Newmarket team, players never gave up, giving it their all until the final buzzer. In other games, the team registered victories over the Beaches 7-2, Peterborough Peterborough #3 7-0 and Peterborough #2 4-2, but dropped games to Whitby #3 10-2, Markham 3-2 and Beaches 7-3.
