Williams, 24, also had a ' breakout year in his fifth National National Hockey League this season with 31 goals and 45 assists for 76 points. This season was his second in Carolina and first full season with the Hurricanes after being traded there in 2003 by the Philadelphia Flyers, who drafted him 28th overall in the first round of the 2000 draft. "He was a little scrawny kid and now he is a Stanley Cup champion," says Mike Vellucci, Plymouth Whalers head coach. "He is a quality kid and you have to give him some respect. He really worked hard for it and always put in his second and third effort. We are all really happy and proud of him here." The Ontario Hockey League Whalers drafted Williams in the seventh round and 125th overall in the 1998 draft. He played two seasons' in Plymouth and was coached by Vellucci when he played for Plymouth's tier two club, the Detroit Compuware AAA team. "Justin was always eager to leam, he was a coach's dream. He was always asking questions and you can tell he took on Rod Brind'Amour's lead on how to play," says Vellucci who adds the high esteem the Plymouth staff had for Justin, during his time with them, contributed to Williams's eventual trade from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Hurricanes during the 2003 season. season. "All the ice time he got this year proves how well rounded a player he is," says Vellucci. "Look, he was on the ice in the last, minute of a one goal game in the seventh game of the Stanley Cup final. That tells you how much confidence they really have in him." Sam Likopulos, currently a Barrie Barrie Colts scout and former owner of the Colbome Black Hawks Junior C team, has followed Williams's Williams's playoff run very closely and is happy about his breakout year with the Hurricanes. Williams Williams played for Colbome which was then coached by Likopulos. I am very, very proud of him," says Likopulos. "He got there (the NHL) with a lot of hard work. He has a lot of talent and skill and he was always very Williams did leam while playing dangerous around the net." in Colbome helped mould an Likopulos says he would like eventual Stanley Cup champion to think that a little bit of what with Carolina. x WANTED HOCKEY PLAYERS TOP BUNS I- ,- r r ■--m DEPUTIES Keith Prlmeau Philadelphia Flyers Wayne Primeau listen Brains Paul Ranger Tnnpa Bay lightning Stan Butler Brampten Battallen ■ "Lvd MM Jt âjU~ #- 11 HL-RC#* tm 1 .
