The oil-rich province - with a booming booming economy and a shortage of just about everything - is desperately searching for partners throughout Canada who can help it meet increasing production demands. Speaking to a group of manufacturers From across Durham Region during a morning workshop at U01T on Monday, lason Myers said opportunity exists not just in the province's oil sands, but right across Alberta. "At the rate we are going at right now, it will take 80 years to get the same opportunities opportunities with China that will be available in Alberta in 10 years," he said. The senior economist for Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, Mr. Myers knows the advantages of exporting materials materials and products to the country's wealthiest wealthiest province. With the increasing dollar value and slowing economic development in the United States, "Alberta stands out as an area of economic opportunity," he said., In' fact, Alberta will have created more • than 400,000jobs between 2005 and 2015. With only 314,000 new workers expected to enter the market during this period,- it leaves the province with a labour shortfall of 86,000. "All sectors are seeing a lightening in the labour market," said James Gleland, a director with Alberta's economic development development department. And: where there are challenges, there are opportunities, he added. 1 While it may be tough for Alberta to significantly significantly increase the local labour force, companies can oulsource parts of produc-, (ion elsewhere -- to places such as Durham Region, for example. Mr. Cleland cited two major opportunities: opportunities: the opportunity to provide technology technology and automation solutions to oftset the dependence on labour, and the opportunity opportunity to partner with Alberta fabricators to supply components to hungry sectors, such as structural steel fabrication, boilers, pressure vessels and tanks, and machine shops. "These arc opportunities unlike anything wc'vc'seen in the past," he said. Opportunity was certainly the buzz word of the morning workshop, with the Alberta delegation encouraging local manufacturers manufacturers lo lake the initiative in finding partnerships partnerships with western companies in need of outsourcing - something local companies seem more than willing to.do. "It is a tremendous opportunity," said Frank Gricco, vice-president and general manager ol'P.R. Engineering, The Oshawa-based company, which specializes in heavy machining and lubrication lubrication and manufactures rock-crushing equipment, already has indirect links to Alberta firms. But Mr. Gricco says there is opportunity to strengthen ties and increase the level of partnership. "Everything they build, we build as well," he said. John Berger, president of Tri-Service Metal Products, also sees opportunity knocking for his design, engineering, and manufacturing company. "It was very informative," lie said ol the seminar, "I am looking lorwaid lo finding mil more," MORTGAGE RATES BEST RATES AS OF: PRESS TIME ADJUSTABLE RATE MORTGAGE 3.4%: 6 MONTHS............ 5.75% 1 YEAR.... .'. 5.20% 2 YEAR..... 5.25% 3 YEAR...: 5.30% 4 YEAR ; 5.30% 5 YEAR...... . 5.35% 7 YEAR ; 5.40% 10 YEAR ..5.55% 15 YEAR......:....-........ 6.14% ALSO AVAILABLE: CASH BACK MORTGAGES AND 100% FINANCING NOTE: IS YOUR MORTGAGE UP FOR RENEWAL?
